The PTE Academic has no formal education prerequisites, no strict age limit beyond 16, and no nationality restrictions. Unlike some exams, you don't need a bachelor's degree or a specific school-leaving certificate to register. This makes it one of the most accessible English proficiency tests for study-abroad and immigration purposes.
Education Requirements
There is zero minimum education requirement to take the PTE Academic. You do not need:
- A high school diploma
- A bachelor's degree
- Any specific coursework or grades
The test is designed to assess your current English ability, not your academic history. If you can understand and respond in English at the level required for your target university or visa, you can sit the exam regardless of your formal education.
Age Limit
You must be at least 16 years old on the day of the test.
- 16–17 years old: You need a signed parental or guardian consent form. The form is available on the Pearson PTE website and must be submitted before booking.
- 18 and above: No consent required.
- No upper age limit: There is no maximum age. Candidates in their 40s, 50s, and beyond take the PTE Academic for immigration or professional registration.
Nationality & Residency
PTE Academic is open to all nationalities. There are no restrictions based on your country of citizenship or current residence.
- Indian citizens: Fully eligible. Test centres are available in major cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, etc.).
- Other nationalities: You can take the test in any country where a test centre operates. Some centres may require a valid visa or local ID — check with the specific centre.
- Passport requirement: You must present a valid, non-expired passport at the test centre. Other forms of ID (e.g., driver's licence, Aadhaar) are not accepted.
Special Category Rules
1. Test Takers with Disabilities
Pearson provides accommodations for candidates with disabilities or medical conditions. You need to request special arrangements at least 30 days before your desired test date. Examples include:
- Extra time
- Screen magnification
- Wheelchair-accessible rooms
- Reader or scribe (in limited cases)
Submit documentation (e.g., doctor's letter) via the PTE Accessibility portal.
2. Rescheduling & Cancellation
You can reschedule or cancel up to 14 days before your test for a full refund (minus a small fee). Between 14 and 7 days, you get a partial refund. Less than 7 days — no refund. Fees were last revised in early 2026 — check the official portal for current numbers.
3. Retake Policy
There is no limit on how many times you can take the PTE Academic. However, you must wait at least 5 days between attempts. Many candidates take the test 2–3 times to reach their target score.

Documents Required on Test Day
- Original, valid passport (must not be expired).
- The passport name must exactly match the name used during registration.
- No photocopies or digital copies accepted.
- No other ID (voter ID, PAN card, driving licence) is valid.
If your passport is lost or expired, you must reschedule after obtaining a new one.
Who Should NOT Take PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is for English proficiency assessment. It is not:
- A subject-matter exam (like GMAT, GRE, or MCAT)
- A test of academic knowledge
- A substitute for a degree or diploma
If you need to prove English for a UK visa, check whether the test variant is PTE Academic UKVI (specific to UK Home Office). Otherwise, standard PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of institutions globally.
