How IELTS Scores Are Calculated
IELTS reports four individual skill scores plus an overall band. Here's how each is derived:
- Listening: 40 questions → raw score converted to a band (0.5 increments). No penalty for wrong answers.
- Reading: 40 questions → raw score converted to a band. Academic and General Training use different conversion scales.
- Writing: Assessed holistically by a trained examiner across 4 criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
- Speaking: Assessed holistically across 4 criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation.
