DELF B1 — Common Questions

What is the DELF B1 pass score?

50 out of 100 total, with at least 5 out of 25 in each of the four components. B1 is more demanding than A1/A2 — the writing and speaking components require you to express and justify opinions, not just describe.

Who needs DELF B1?

DELF B1 is the highest level in the DELF Scolaire range, making it popular for school students completing French through Class 12. It is also useful for short-stay visa applications, Erasmus programmes, and as a stepping stone to B2 for Canada PR or France university.

Is DELF B1 enough for Canada immigration?

DELF B1 is not directly accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. For federal immigration, you need TEF Canada or TCF Canada. However, DELF B1 can support Quebec immigration applications (PRTQ) and demonstrates French language ability for Francophone mobility programmes.

How long to prepare for DELF B1 from zero?

Starting from scratch, reaching B1 typically takes 12–18 months of regular study (approximately 300–350 hours total). From A2 level, targeted B1 preparation takes 4–6 months. The writing and speaking tasks require substantial practice beyond just vocabulary and grammar.
