KNM — Knowledge of Dutch Society
KNM tests what you know about how the Netherlands actually works: how institutions function, what rights and obligations you have, and how things are usually done. It is a knowledge exam, not a language exam, and it is required of everyone with an integration obligation.
Themes you will be asked about
- Wonen — renting, contracts, housing corporations, rules in the neighbourhood.
- Werk en inkomen — contracts, payslips, sick leave, workplace rights.
- Gezondheid en zorg — the huisarts as gatekeeper, referrals, insurance.
- Onderwijs — compulsory education, school advice, mbo and hbo.
- Overheid — the gemeente, DigiD, official documents.
- Politiek — elections, the gemeenteraad, how Dutch democracy is organised.
- Normen en waarden — equal treatment, freedom of expression and religion, punctuality and directness.
How to prepare for it
KNM rewards practical familiarity rather than memorised trivia. The questions tend to be situational — what you should do, which body is responsible, which document you need. Practising with realistic scenarios is far more effective than reading a list of facts, which is how our mock is built.
