JLPT N1 Mock Test
N1 is the summit — the highest level of Japanese certification. It is the gateway to university research positions, professional translation, banking and legal careers, top corporate roles, and the decisive 15-point boost on the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa for permanent residence.
Practise the full JLPT N1 (日本語能力試験 N1) online. Our mocks mirror the JEES exam format with very long reading passages, integrated-comprehension listening at meeting-room speed, and the brutal 110-minute grammar + reading block that decides most outcomes. AI scoring shows you exactly which sub-section needs more attention before exam day.
JLPT N1 exam format — the summit of Japanese
N1 reading passages reach ~1,000 characters with dense academic, legal, and editorial prose. The 110-minute grammar + reading block is the longest test segment in the JLPT system — pacing is the difference between a pass and a fail at near-perfect content knowledge.
言語知識 (Vocabulary)
30 min · 6 parts
Kanji reading, contextually-defined expressions, paraphrases, usage, and word formation. ~10,000-word vocabulary spanning literature, science, law, and finance.
言語知識 + 読解 (Grammar + Reading)
110 min · 7 parts
Sentence-pattern grammar, sentence composition, text grammar, short to very long passages (~1,000 chars), integrated comprehension, thematic comparison, and information retrieval.
聴解 (Listening)
60 min · 5 parts
Task-based, key-point, summary comprehension, integrated comprehension, verbal expression, and quick response — natural broadcast and meeting-room speed.
N1 Scoring — three sections, three minimums
| Scoring section | Max points | Sectional pass |
|---|---|---|
| Language Knowledge (Vocab + Grammar) | 60 | 19 |
| Reading | 60 | 19 |
| Listening | 60 | 19 |
| Overall total | 180 | 100 |
N1 has the highest overall threshold (100/180). Equalised scaled scoring means raw correct answers are converted by JEES to account for difficulty variation across exam sittings.
What you'll master with our N1 mock tests
Who needs JLPT N1?
University researchers & PhD candidates
Japanese-taught doctoral programmes, MEXT scholarships, and laboratory positions overwhelmingly expect N1. Without it, you cannot follow seminars or read source material at academic speed.
Translators & interpreters
JP↔EN and JP↔IN-language translation work assumes N1 as a baseline credibility signal. Even AI-assisted translation roles use N1 as a hiring filter.
Banking, finance & legal professionals
Japanese banks, asset managers, and law firms with Indian operations require N1 for client-facing roles. Compliance and legal-doc review is impossible below N1.
HSP visa fast-track candidates
JLPT N1 adds 15 points to the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa scoring sheet — often the decisive component to reach the 70 or 80-point fast-track to permanent residence.
Frequently asked — JLPT N1
How long does it take to go from N2 to N1?
Most learners need 12–18 months of intensive study (2–3 hours daily) to bridge N2 to N1. Kanji jumps from ~1,000 to ~2,000, grammar enters nuanced literary territory, and reading passages reach ~1,000 characters of dense academic and editorial prose. Many candidates take two attempts to clear N1.
How much is the JLPT N1 fee in India?
Approximately ₹2,500 in India. N1 is at the top of the JLPT fee range. Fees are paid through the Japan Foundation New Delhi or authorised partner centres in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and other cities. Always check the JLPT India portal for the live fee.
Does JLPT N1 expire?
No. JLPT N1 has lifetime validity. For visa and HSP point purposes, however, certificates from within the last 5–10 years carry more weight with immigration officers and employers.
Is JLPT N1 required for the HSP visa to Japan?
N1 is not strictly required, but it adds 15 points to the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa scoring sheet — often the decisive component to reach the 70-point threshold (which fast-tracks permanent residence to 3 years) or the 80-point threshold (which fast-tracks PR to 1 year). For Indian engineers and professionals, N1 is often the cleanest single way to add 15 points.
JLPT N1 vs BJT J1 — which carries more weight in Japan?
JLPT N1 is the universal academic + general-purpose ceiling and is recognised across all sectors. BJT J1 specifically signals high-level business Japanese (negotiation, executive meeting fluency). For research, translation, or generalist roles — pick N1. For corporate leadership, sales, and senior management — pair N1 with BJT J1+. The two complement each other rather than substitute.
