JLPT N4 Mock Test
N4 is the SSW visa minimum — the biggest Indian-to-Japan migration pathway. The Specified Skilled Worker visa lets you work in Japan across 14 industries (food service, hospitality, construction, agriculture, caregiving, etc.). Without N4 or JFT-Basic, your file does not move.
Practise the full JLPT N4 (日本語能力試験 N4) online. Our mock tests mirror the exact JEES format — three timed blocks of multiple-choice questions with instant AI scoring. Build the vocabulary, kanji, and listening reflexes you need for the SSW interview and Japanese workplace life.
JLPT N4 exam format — three timed blocks
N4 follows the same skill-set as N5 but with broader vocabulary, more kanji, longer passages, and a faster listening pace. No writing or speaking — everything is multiple-choice.
言語知識 (Vocabulary)
25 min · 5 parts
Kanji reading, orthography, contextually-defined expressions, paraphrases, and usage. ~1,500-word vocabulary base across daily-life topics.
言語知識 + 読解 (Grammar + Reading)
55 min · 7 parts
Sentence-pattern grammar, sentence composition, short and medium-length passages (~250 chars), and information-retrieval texts.
聴解 (Listening)
35 min · 4 parts
Task-based listening, key-point listening, verbal expression, and quick response — slightly faster pace than N5, with workplace and shop contexts.
N4 Scoring — sectional + overall pass
| Scoring section | Max points | Sectional pass |
|---|---|---|
| Language Knowledge + Reading | 120 | 38 |
| Listening | 60 | 19 |
| Overall total | 180 | 90 |
You must clear sectional minimums and the overall 90/180. A common N4 fail pattern: strong reading, weak listening that drops below 19/60.

Who needs JLPT N4?
SSW visa applicants
N4 is the official Japanese-language minimum for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa — your gateway to working in Japan across 14 industries.
JFT-Basic alternates
Many candidates take both N4 and JFT-Basic for redundancy. N4 carries more long-term weight on Japanese CVs.
Working-holiday + cultural exchange
Some Japan cultural exchange programmes (interns, MEXT short-term) require N4 as a baseline language proof.
Indian engineering grads going to Japan
Internship pathways with Japanese IT and manufacturing firms typically begin at N4, with companies sponsoring further training to N3/N2.
Frequently asked — JLPT N4
Is JLPT N4 enough for the SSW visa to Japan?
Yes. N4 is the official Japanese-language threshold for the SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) Type 1 visa. You also need to pass the relevant skills test for your industry (caregiving, food service, hospitality, etc.). Many candidates also clear JFT-Basic alongside N4 as a backup.
JLPT N4 vs JFT-Basic — which is faster?
JFT-Basic is held monthly with results in about 5 weeks, so it is faster to obtain. JLPT N4 is held only in July and December, but the certificate is widely recognised and carries more long-term weight in Japan. Smart candidates target both — JFT-Basic to move quickly, JLPT N4 for career flexibility.
Does JLPT N4 expire?
No. JLPT N4 has lifetime validity. However, for SSW visa applications the certificate should be relatively recent — employers and immigration officers prefer to see proof obtained within the last 5–10 years.
What is the JLPT N4 exam fee in India?
Typically around ₹2,200 in India. Fees are paid through the Japan Foundation New Delhi, Embassy of Japan partner centres, and authorised test cities. Confirm the latest fee on the official JLPT India portal before each registration window.
How long does it take to prepare for N4 from N5?
Most learners with a solid N5 base need 4–6 months of consistent study to clear N4. The biggest jumps are kanji count (100 → ~300), te-form chains, and listening pace. Our AI-graded mocks let you spot weak modules early — usually listening — so you can target practice instead of grinding the full syllabus.
