JLPT N5 exam format — vocabulary, grammar, reading & listening
Unlike European language exams, JLPT has no writing or speaking sections. All questions are multiple-choice across three timed blocks.
言語知識 (Vocabulary)
20 min · 4 parts
Kanji reading, orthography, contextually-defined expressions, and paraphrases. Tests basic words used in everyday situations (~800 words).
言語知識 + 読解 (Grammar + Reading)
40 min · 6 parts
Sentence-pattern grammar, sentence composition, short passages (~80 chars), and information retrieval from notices, menus and timetables.
聴解 (Listening)
30 min · 4 parts
Task-based listening, key-point listening, verbal expression, and quick response. Tests slow-paced everyday Japanese in classroom and daily-life scenarios.

You must clear both the sectional minimums and the overall 80/180. Scoring 75/120 on reading is meaningless if you score below 19/60 on listening — the certificate will not be issued.

JLPT N5 vs JFT-Basic — which should I take for the SSW visa?
Strictly speaking, the SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) visa accepts either JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic. N5 alone is not sufficient for SSW. However, N5 is a great practice step and uses overlapping vocabulary — many Indian candidates use N5 prep as a launch pad before tackling N4 or JFT-Basic. JFT-Basic is held monthly and has results in 5 weeks, while JLPT is twice a year.
Does the JLPT N5 certificate expire?
No. JLPT certificates have lifetime validity. Once you pass N5, the certificate is valid forever. However, some employers may treat older certificates as a weaker proxy for current ability, so refreshing or progressing to higher levels matters.
What is the JLPT N5 exam fee in India?
JLPT registration fees in India are typically around ₹2,000 for N5 (the lower levels are slightly cheaper than N1/N2). Fees are paid through the Japan Foundation New Delhi or the Embassy of Japan partner centres. Always check the latest fee on the official portal before registering.
When is JLPT held in India each year?
JLPT is held twice a year — on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. Registration windows usually open about three months before each exam. Cities include Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and several others.
How many kanji and vocabulary do I need for N5?
Approximately 100 basic kanji and about 800 words. You should also be comfortable with all hiragana (46) and katakana (46) including dakuten, handakuten, and youon combinations. Our mock tests drill the exact N5 syllabus list so nothing surprises you on test day.
