These 10 JLPT N2 questions are designed to give you a realistic feel for the exam — not just the answers, but the reasoning behind them. Each question comes from one of the three sections: Vocabulary/Grammar, Reading, and Listening. Use them to gauge your current level and identify weak spots.

1. Vocabulary: Choose the correct reading

Question: 彼の態度は非常に曖昧だった。 A) あいまい B) あいまい C) あいまい D) あいまい

Solution: The correct reading is あいまい (aimai). The kanji 曖昧 means "vague" or "ambiguous." In JLPT N2, you're expected to know this common compound. The trick here is that all options look identical in hiragana, but the correct one is あいまい (length: 4 moras). The other options are distractors with different vowel lengths or consonant changes.

Answer: A) あいまい

2. Vocabulary: Choose the correct word in context

Question: この問題はとても複雑で、解決には専門的な_____が必要だ。 A) 知識 B) 知能 C) 知性 D) 知恵

Solution: The sentence says "This problem is very complex; solving it requires specialized _____." The best fit is 知識 (chishiki, knowledge). 知能 (chinou, intelligence) is innate ability, 知性 (chisei, intellect) is more abstract, and 知恵 (chie, wisdom) is practical wisdom. For a technical problem, specialized knowledge is the logical choice.

Answer: A) 知識

3. Grammar: Fill in the blank

Question: 彼は毎日ジョギングをしている_____、体重が減らない。 A) にもかかわらず B) ものの C) のに D) からといって

Solution: The sentence means "Even though he jogs every day, he doesn't lose weight." The blank requires a concessive conjunction. にもかかわらず is formal and fits perfectly. ものの also means "although" but is less common with this pattern. のに is casual and would work in speech but is less appropriate for written JLPT N2. からといって means "just because."

Answer: A) にもかかわらず

4. Grammar: Sentence composition

Question: 彼女は_____、いつも笑顔を絶やさない。 A) 大変な状況にありながら B) 大変な状況にあると C) 大変な状況であれば D) 大変な状況だから

Solution: The sentence means "Even though she is in a difficult situation, she never stops smiling." The correct structure is 〜ながら (while/despite). Option A (大変な状況にありながら) uses ありながら, which is the formal ある + ながら, meaning "despite being in a difficult situation." The other options don't convey the contrast.

Answer: A) 大変な状況にありながら

5. Reading: Short passage comprehension

Solution: The passage mentions both a disadvantage (reduced team cohesion) and an advantage (increased employee satisfaction). It presents a balanced view. Therefore, option C is correct. Options A and B are too extreme. Option D is false because the first sentence says many companies are introducing it.

Answer: C

6. Reading: Medium passage — main idea

Solution: The passage explains that the etiquette of refraining from phone calls is changing because smartphones have shifted communication to text and social media. The main idea is that technology is influencing manners. Option A is not stated. Option C is false. Option D is an overgeneralization.

Answer: B

7. Listening: Short dialogue (script)

Script: 男:すみません、この書類の書き方がわからないんですが。 女:あ、それですね。こちらの見本を見ながら書いてください。特にここ、日付の欄は西暦で書く必要があります。 男:わかりました。ありがとうございます。

Question: 男の人は何を聞いていますか。 A) 書類の提出期限 B) 書類の書き方 C) 見本の場所 D) 日付の意味

Solution: The man says "I don't understand how to fill out this document." The woman then explains. So he is asking about how to write the document. Option B is correct.

Answer: B

8. Listening: Longer conversation (script)

Script: 女:来週の会議ですが、資料の準備はできていますか。 男:はい、あと少しです。グラフのデータを確認しているところです。 女:そうですか。では、明日の午前中までに完成させてください。 男:承知しました。

Question: 男の人はこれから何をしなければなりませんか。 A) 資料を印刷する B) グラフのデータを確認する C) 会議に出席する D) 明日の午前中までに資料を完成させる

Solution: The woman says "Please finish it by tomorrow morning." The man agrees. So his task is to complete the materials by that deadline. Option D is the most direct answer. Option B is what he is currently doing, not what he must do next.

Answer: D

9. Grammar: Sentence rearrangement

Question: 次の文を正しく並べ替えなさい。 「彼は_____ _____ _____ _____ 驚いた。」

  1. 1にも 2. 一度 3. 見た 4. 映画

Solution: The correct order is: 彼は一度見た映画にも驚いた。Meaning "He was surprised even at a movie he had seen once." The pattern is 〜にも (even at/with). The noun phrase 一度見た映画 (a movie he had seen once) modifies にも.

Answer: 2 → 3 → 4 → 1

10. Vocabulary: Choose the synonym

Question: 「彼は常に冷静だ。」の「冷静」に最も近い意味の言葉はどれか。 A) 落ち着いている B) 熱心だ C) 興奮している D) 悲しい

Solution: 冷静 (reisei) means "calm" or "composed." The closest synonym is 落ち着いている (ochitsuiteiru, calm). The other options are opposites or unrelated.

Answer: A) 落ち着いている
