Passing the JLPT N2 in four weeks is ambitious but doable if you already have solid N3-level foundations. This roadmap assumes you can commit 3β4 hours daily and have completed at least one N3-level textbook. If you are starting from scratch, extend the timeline to 12β16 weeks.
Week 1: Diagnostic & Vocabulary Blitz
Day 1β2: Take a baseline mock
Before you study anything, take a full JLPT N2 mock test under timed conditions. This reveals your weakest sections β vocabulary, grammar, reading speed, or listening.

Day 3β7: Vocabulary & Kanji
- Use Anki with a JLPT N2 core deck (2,000+ words). Aim for 50 new cards per day.
- Focus on kanji compounds: words like ηΆζ (iji, maintenance), η΅εΆ (keiei, management), εΎε (keikou, trend).
- Daily goal: 1 hour vocabulary + 30 minutes kanji writing (stroke order not tested but helps recall).
Week 2: Grammar & Sentence Structure
Days 8β14: Master N2 grammar patterns
- Study 20β25 grammar points per day using a resource like "Try! JLPT N2" or "Shin Kanzen Master N2 Grammar."
- Key patterns: γγ«ιγγ¦ (on the occasion of), γγ«δΌ΄γ£γ¦ (in accordance with), γγεγγ (regardless of).
- Write 3 example sentences for each pattern to internalize usage.
- Daily goal: 1.5 hours grammar + 30 minutes vocabulary review.
Week 3: Reading & Listening Immersion
Days 15β21: Speed reading and listening
- Read one N2-level passage per day from news sites (NHK News Easy) or past papers. Time yourself: aim for 3β4 minutes per passage.
- Listen to JLPT N2 listening practice tracks β focus on understanding main ideas and speaker intentions.
- Daily goal: 1 hour reading + 1 hour listening (use podcasts like "Let's Learn Japanese from Small Talk" at 1.25x speed).
Week 4: Full Mocks & Weakness Patching
Days 22β28: Simulate exam conditions
- Take one full mock test every other day (3β4 mocks total). Use official JLPT N2 past papers or high-quality third-party mocks.
- Review every mistake: note the kanji, grammar pattern, or listening trap that caused the error.
- On rest days, review your error log and drill weak areas.
- Daily goal: 2 hours mock + 1 hour review.
Last 2 days: Light review, no new content
- Skim grammar point lists, listen to 30 minutes of Japanese audio, and sleep well.
- Do not take a mock the day before the exam β it only adds anxiety.

Resource Sequencing
| Resource | When to Use | |----------|-------------| | "Try! JLPT N2" (Grammar) | Week 2 | | "Shin Kanzen Master N2 Reading" | Week 3 | | "JLPT N2 Official Past Papers" | Week 1 (diagnostic) & Week 4 (mocks) | | Anki Core 2k/6k Deck | Throughout | | NHK News Easy | Week 3 reading practice | | JapanesePod101 N2 Listening | Week 3β4 |
Common Pitfalls
- Skipping vocabulary: Many candidates underestimate N2 vocabulary volume. Without 2,000+ words, reading and listening become guesswork.
- Ignoring listening speed: N2 listening is faster than N3. Train with 1.25x speed after week 1.
- Not timing mocks: Untimed practice gives false confidence. Always use a timer.
