The JLPT N2 exam is the second-highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. It certifies that you can understand Japanese used in a variety of everyday situations, from casual conversation to more formal business contexts. Passing N2 is a common requirement for studying at a Japanese university or working in a Japanese company.

JLPT N2 Exam Structure Overview
The N2 test is divided into three sections, administered in one sitting with a short break. The total test time is approximately 155 minutes.

Section 1: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar) + Reading
This is the longest section, combining vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension into one continuous block. You cannot skip between sub-sections — you must answer in order.
Vocabulary (約25問)
- Kanji reading: choose the correct reading for a given kanji word.
- Orthography: choose the correct kanji for a given reading.
- Word formation: select the correct word in context.
- Contextually correct expressions: fill in the blank with the most appropriate word.
- Synonyms: identify the word closest in meaning.
- Word usage: choose the sentence where a given word is used correctly.
Grammar (約20問)
- Sentence grammar: choose the correct grammatical form to complete a sentence.
- Sentence composition: reorder words to form a grammatically correct sentence.
- Passage grammar: fill in multiple blanks in a short passage.
Reading (約20問)
- Short passages (about 200 characters): 4-5 questions.
- Medium passages (about 500 characters): 6-8 questions.
- Long passages (about 1000 characters): 4-5 questions.
- Integrated reading: compare two passages (about 600 characters total) — 3-4 questions.
- Thematic reading: read a longer argument (about 1000 characters) and answer 4-5 questions.
- Information retrieval: scan a flyer, notice, or advertisement for specific details — 2-3 questions.

Section 2: Listening (聴解)
The listening section is about 50 minutes long and tests your ability to understand spoken Japanese in various contexts. All audio is played once.
Listening Question Types
- Task-based comprehension (課題理解): Listen to a short dialogue or monologue and choose the correct action or next step. (6-7 questions)
- Point comprehension (ポイント理解): Listen to a longer dialogue and identify the key point. (6-7 questions)
- Summary comprehension (概要理解): Listen to a monologue and choose the statement that best summarises it. (6-7 questions)
- Interactive expression (即時応答): Listen to a short question or statement and choose the most natural response. (8-10 questions)
- Integrated comprehension (総合理解): Listen to a longer conversation and answer multiple questions about it. (4-5 questions)
Marking Scheme
The JLPT uses a scaled scoring system, not raw marks. The total score is out of 180 points, divided as follows:
- Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar): 60 points
- Reading: 60 points
- Listening: 60 points
Each section's raw score is converted to a scaled score between 0 and 60. The scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test administrations. This means you cannot simply count correct answers to predict your score — the conversion table is not published.
Pass Criteria
To pass the JLPT N2, you must meet both conditions:
- 1Total scaled score ≥ 90 points (out of 180).
- 2Sectional scaled score ≥ 19 points in each of the three sections (Language Knowledge, Reading, Listening).
If you score 90 or above overall but get 18 or lower in any one section, you fail. This ensures balanced ability across all skills.

Test Day Logistics
- Format: Paper-based (pencil and eraser provided). All answers marked on an answer sheet.
- No negative marking: Unanswered or wrong answers simply get zero.
- Break: A short break (10-15 minutes) between Section 1 and Section 2. You cannot leave the room during the break.
- Results: Typically released about 2 months after the test date. You can check online using your test voucher number. A certificate is mailed to your registered address.
How to Prepare for JLPT N2
- Master N2-level kanji and vocabulary: Aim for about 1,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words.
- Practice reading speed: The reading section is time-pressured. Read newspapers, blogs, and short stories in Japanese regularly.
- Listen to natural-speed Japanese: Podcasts, news, and dramas help train your ear for the listening section.
- Take timed mock tests: Simulate the full 155-minute exam to build stamina and identify weak areas.
