How the French bonus stacks on top of your IELTS

Express Entry's CRS scores you on TWO official languages. English is your "first official language" (typically tested via IELTS); French becomes your "second official language" (tested via TEF Canada or TCF Canada).

The points come in two layers:

Skill points for the CLB you score in French (up to 24 points across 4 abilities for principal applicant without a spouse)
Skill transferability bonuses when your French CLB combines with English CLB and education (up to 50 additional points)

The transferability bonus is what creates the famous "+50 CRS" headline. It only fully unlocks when you hit CLB 9 in all 4 French abilities AND CLB 7+ in English.

FAQs

Do I need CLB 9 in ALL four abilities or just the average?

All four. The transferability bonus only fully unlocks when each of Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking hits CLB 9 individually. If one ability is at CLB 8 and the rest are CLB 9, the bonus partially scales down but the candidate still gets meaningful points.

Does French help even if I'm already at IELTS 8.0?

Yes — substantially. Even very high English scores can't break the CRS ceiling alone for many candidates. The French bonus (up to +50 points) is often what pushes a profile from "competitive" to "ITA-likely". If you're already at high IELTS, French is the highest-leverage thing you can add.

Is DELF B2 enough for the bonus?

No. DELF/DALF are NOT accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. You must take TEF Canada or TCF Canada. DELF B2 is great preparation though — most DELF B2 holders are already at CLB 7+ on TEF/TCF Canada. Convert your existing DELF prep into a TEF/TCF Canada attempt.

Can my spouse's French score help?

Yes — if your spouse accompanies you on PR, their French CLB scores in the secondary applicant slot also add CRS points (smaller amount, but real).
