CLB 7 French — The Express Entry Threshold

CLB 7 is the entry threshold for the bilingual Express Entry stream. Below CLB 7 your French adds almost nothing to your CRS score; at CLB 7+ you start seeing meaningful bonus points.

Why CLB 7 is the threshold

IRCC's transferability bonus only kicks in once your French hits CLB 7+. At CLB 6 you collect roughly 12 skill points but ZERO transferability bonus — the +50 CRS multiplier you came for doesn't materialise. The jump from CLB 6 to CLB 7 is therefore the single most rewarding effort you can put into your French study.

Common CLB 7 misses (drop you to CLB 6)

  • Tense errors with passé composé / imparfait choice — using one when the other is needed, especially in narratives.
  • Limited subordination — relying only on coordination ("et", "mais") instead of "qui", "que", "parce que", "quand", "lorsque".
  • Register slips — informal "tu" or contractions in formal letters.
  • Connector poverty — repeating "et puis" / "donc" instead of varied transitions.
  • Listening: confusing similar-sound words — "il a" vs "il y a", "c'est" vs "ce sont".
  • Writing length — under-writing the 200-250 word argumentation task often reveals weaker structuring vs the same vocabulary deployed in 230 words.

How to push past CLB 7

  1. Drill subordination via DELF B1/B2 reading texts. Underline every "qui", "que", "dont" you encounter.
  2. Practise full-length writing tasks with a timer (60 minutes). Aim for the upper word range (250 words on argumentation).
  3. Watch 15 min/day of Radio-Canada news (Téléjournal). News register builds connector + subordination habits.
  4. Take a full mock weekly. Track sub-skill bands separately — your weakest band is your real CLB.
  5. Speaking: record yourself answering TEF Canada Task 2 prompts (5-min persuade). Listen back and self-mark register + subordination usage.

FAQs

What's CLB 7 in DELF terms?
Roughly DELF B2. A confident DELF B2 holder usually scores CLB 7-8 on TEF Canada. Borderline B2 holders sometimes score CLB 6, which is why the official exam attempt should follow ~30 hours of TEF/TCF-format-specific practice, not just DELF work.
Can I get PR with CLB 7 French?
Yes if your overall CRS profile is strong. CLB 7 French adds ~25 CRS points on average (skill + transferability). Combined with strong English IELTS, that's often enough to push a profile from below cutoff to above it.
How long does it take from zero to CLB 7?
12-18 months of consistent study (1-2 hours/day) is the typical realistic range. Some learners get there in 9 months with intensive immersion. Without immersion, expect 18-24 months.
