How the Three Scoring Scales Compare
Each exam has its own scale. Here's what each score actually unlocks — mapped to the CEFR rungs you already know.
Cambridge English Scale
Range 142 — 230 · mapped to CEFR
Mastery ceiling
Top of the Cambridge English Scale. Reserved for fully native-equivalent users.
Cambridge C2 pass
A 'Grade A' at C2 Proficiency. Signals near-native command in academic and professional settings.
Cambridge C1 pass
UK SELT-approved for student & worker visas. The level Russell Group universities ask for.
Cambridge B2 First
Solid upper-intermediate. Enough for most foundation courses and many UK colleges.
Cambridge B1 Preliminary
Functional intermediate. Building level — keep training toward B2 / C1 for university entry.
PTE Academic Score
Range 10 — 90 · mapped to IELTS
Expert user
Above the ceiling required by any visa programme. Bragging-rights territory.
Superior English (AU PR)
Unlocks the full +20 Superior English points on the Australian skilled migration grid.
Proficient English
+10 Proficient points for AU PR. Required by many MBA + master's programmes worldwide.
Competent (visa floor)
Minimum for Australian skilled migration. Also OK for most undergrad pathways.
Modest / limited
Below visa thresholds. Use this band to benchmark progress, not to apply.
OET Grades
A — E · per-skill grading
350-450
Highest band. Vanishingly rare; signals examiner-level command.
350-440
The target grade. Accepted by NMC (UK nursing), AHPRA (AU), MCNZ, NMBI for full registration.
300-340
Accepted by some UK NHS trusts for pre-registration roles. Push to B for full clearance.
200-290
Below registration threshold for most regulators. Build to B+.
< 200
Foundation. Significant training needed before re-sitting.
Which One Should You Take?
The three exams are not interchangeable. Use the decision rules below — they're the same ones we'd give a friend over coffee.
Pick Cambridge if…
- You want a certificate that never expires (vs IELTS / PTE / OET = 2 years)
- You're applying to Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh, or other prestige UK universities
- You prefer a more traditional, literary, four-paper exam over computer-based tests
- You want a single proof of English good for life — for visas, jobs, future re-applications
Pick PTE Academic if…
- You need your result fast — typically 48 hours, often the next day
- You're applying for Australia PR and chasing PTE 79+ for the +20 Superior English bonus
- You're confident with computers and don't want a human speaking examiner
- Your university accepts PTE (most AU + UK + many US programmes do)
Pick OET if…
- You're a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, dentist, physio, or other healthcare professional
- You're targeting NMC (UK), AHPRA (AU), MCNZ (NZ), or Irish NMBI registration
- You want exam tasks set in real clinical contexts — case notes, referrals, patient consults
- You score better when content is on familiar healthcare ground than abstract academic topics
Still not sure?
- Default for UK university with no time pressure → Cambridge C1 Advanced
- Default for Australia PR or fast result → PTE Academic
- Default for any healthcare regulator → OET
- Already have IELTS 7.0+ and want a lifetime backup → Cambridge C1

Common questions
Is LanguageTest.in affiliated with Cambridge Assessment, Pearson, or CBLA?
No. We are an independent exam preparation platform. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially recognised by Cambridge Assessment English, Pearson PLC, Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, or any English-language certification body. "Cambridge English", "CAE", "CPE", "PTE Academic", and "OET" are trademarks of their respective owners and are used here under nominative-fair-use principles to describe the exams candidates prepare for.
Cambridge C1 vs C2 — which should I take?
For 95% of university-bound candidates: C1 Advanced. It's the level UK universities (including Oxbridge, LSE, UCL) ask for, it's SELT-approved for visas, and it's significantly more achievable than C2. C2 Proficiency is the world's hardest English certification — take it only if you need genuine academic-mastery proof (e.g., English-medium PhD in literature, academic publishing, or to compete for the most selective scholarships).
PTE Academic vs PTE Core — which one for Canada?
PTE Core for Canada PR (IRCC approved PTE Core in early 2024 for SINP / Express Entry). PTE Academic for Australia PR, UK student visas, and university admissions globally. They are different exams with different formats — make sure your destination accepts the one you book. This hub covers PTE Academic specifically.
Does OET work for AU / NZ / UK / Ireland nurses?
Yes. OET is accepted for full registration by NMC (UK), AHPRA (Australia), MCNZ (New Zealand), Irish NMBI, plus regulators across 40+ jurisdictions. The OET Medicine version is accepted by GMC (UK doctors), Medical Board of Australia, and similar bodies. It's the only major English test purpose-built for healthcare context.
What are Cambridge / PTE / OET fees in India?
Approximate 2026 fees: Cambridge C1 Advanced ~₹13,500, Cambridge C2 Proficiency ~₹14,500, PTE Academic ~₹15,900, OET ~₹17,000. Add transport, retake risk, and result-delivery surcharges. Our 5-pack of mocks is ₹1,499 — about one-tenth of a single attempt — and lets you fail safely in practice before the real exam.
