What is Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE)?
The Cambridge C1 Advanced, formerly known as the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), is a high-level English proficiency exam offered by Cambridge Assessment English. It is designed for learners who have achieved an advanced level of English – corresponding to Level C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Passing the CAE proves that you can use English confidently in academic, professional, and social settings.
Unlike some other English exams, the CAE is a lifetime certificate – you never need to retake it. It is widely recognised by universities, employers, and government bodies around the world. In India, it is increasingly valued by top MBA programs, multinational corporations, and study-abroad aspirants.
The exam tests all four language skills – Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking – plus Use of English (grammar and vocabulary). It is typically taken by students aiming to study at English-speaking universities, professionals seeking career advancement, or anyone wanting a prestigious English credential.
Exam Format at a Glance
The CAE is a paper-based or computer-based exam. The total test time is about 4 hours. Here is the breakdown:
- Reading and Use of English (1 hour 30 minutes) – 8 parts, 56 questions. Tests reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Writing (1 hour 30 minutes) – 2 tasks: one compulsory essay (220-260 words) and one choice task (letter/email, report, proposal, or review).
- Listening (approximately 40 minutes) – 4 parts, 30 questions. Includes monologues and dialogues.
- Speaking (15 minutes per pair of candidates) – 4 parts: interview, individual long turn, collaborative task, and discussion.
Scoring: Each paper is weighted equally. Results are reported on the Cambridge English Scale:
- Grade A – 200-210 (CEFR C2)
- Grade B – 193-199 (CEFR C1)
- Grade C – 180-192 (CEFR C1)
- Level B2 – 160-179 (CEFR B2, not a pass)
A score of 180 or above is a pass. Scores are valid for life.
