What the IELTS General Training Test Covers

Four skills. One sitting. Band scores 1–9 per skill. The overall is the mean of all four, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Listening

~30 min

4 sections, 40 questions. Identical to IELTS Academic — everyday social conversations (Sections 1–2) and monologues, training materials, and workplace discussions (Sections 3–4). Approx. 30 min of audio. Same format, same band conversion as Academic.

Reading (General Training)

60 min

Section 1: Practical texts — notices, advertisements, timetables, and instructions. Section 2: Workplace and training materials. Section 3: One longer text from a newspaper or magazine. 40 questions, same task types as Academic but using everyday English. Texts are shorter and more accessible.

Writing

60 min

Task 1 (20 min, 150+ words): Write a letter — formal, semi-formal, or informal. You may be asked to request information, explain a situation, make a complaint, apologise, or express an opinion. Task 2 (40 min, 250+ words): Essay identical to IELTS Academic — argue a point of view, discuss a topic, or evaluate ideas.

Speaking

11–14 min

Identical to IELTS Academic — 3 parts: Part 1 general personal interview (4–5 min), Part 2 individual long turn with cue card (3–4 min), Part 3 two-way abstract discussion (4–5 min). Conducted face-to-face with a trained examiner. Band descriptors are the same as Academic.

🔑

Key difference from Academic

General Training differs from Academic only in Reading (shorter, everyday texts instead of academic journals) and Writing Task 1 (a letter instead of a data description). Listening and Speaking are identical across both variants. Band conversion tables are also the same for Listening.

IELTS General Training — Frequently Asked Questions

Real questions from Indian candidates preparing for Australia, Canada, and UK migration

Is IELTS General Training easier than Academic?

The reading and writing sections are generally considered more accessible in General Training — texts are shorter, drawn from everyday contexts, and the Task 1 letter is more structured than a data description. However, 'easier format' does not mean 'easier to pass' — migration visa band requirements can be strict. Australia Proficient English (189/190 visa) requires 7.0 in every component. The standard is set by your immigration authority, not by the exam's relative difficulty.

What band do I need for Australia PR with General Training?

For Australia Skilled Independent (subclass 189/190), Competent English is the minimum threshold and requires 6.0 in every IELTS skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). Proficient English — which adds 10 points to your EOI — requires 7.0 in each component. Superior English — which adds 20 points — requires 8.0 in each. For most competitive occupations, 7.0 in every skill (Proficient English) is the practical target that meaningfully improves your invitation prospects.

Does IELTS General Training count for Canada Express Entry?

Yes. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training for all Express Entry streams. For the Federal Skilled Worker programme, the minimum is CLB 7 in each skill (approximately 6.0 per skill). For the maximum CRS English bonus, target CLB 10: Listening ≥ 8.5, Reading ≥ 8.0, Writing ≥ 7.5, Speaking ≥ 8.0. Most candidates focus on CLB 9 as the best cost-benefit target: Listening ≥ 8.0, Reading ≥ 7.0, Writing ≥ 7.0, Speaking ≥ 7.0.

Can I use General Training for UK university admission?

No. UK universities require IELTS Academic (specifically UKVI IELTS Academic) for the Student visa route — General Training is not accepted for university entry. General Training is accepted for UK Skilled Worker (Tier 2) employment visas if required by the employer. Most UK professional licensing bodies (GMC, NMC, GPhC, NMC) also require IELTS Academic, not General Training.
