What the IELTS Academic Test Covers
Four skills. One sitting. Each skill scored on the 1–9 band scale. Your overall band is the mean of all four, rounded to the nearest 0.5.
Listening
~30 min4 sections, 40 questions. Academic conversations and monologues — university lectures, discussions, seminars, and presentations. Approx. 30 min of audio plus 10 min transfer time for paper-based test.
Reading (Academic)
60 min3 passages drawn from books, journals, newspapers, and magazines — all on academic topics. 40 questions. Task types include matching headings, True/False/Not Given, sentence completion, and short-answer questions.
Writing
60 minTask 1 (20 min, 150+ words): Describe a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map — summarise trends, make comparisons, no personal opinion. Task 2 (40 min, 250+ words): Academic essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem with a clear position and well-developed reasoning.
Speaking
11–14 min3 parts: Part 1 — general personal interview (4–5 min). Part 2 — individual long turn with a cue card (3–4 min). Part 3 — two-way abstract discussion extending topics from Part 2 (4–5 min). Conducted face-to-face with a trained examiner.
Band scoring: 1–9, in 0.5 increments
Each of the 4 skills receives an individual band score. The overall band is the mean of all four bands, rounded to the nearest 0.5. There is no pass or fail — your score is compared against the band requirement for your specific goal (visa, university, or professional body).

IELTS Academic — Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from Indian candidates preparing for IELTS Academic
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Academic uses academic reading texts (journals, scholarly articles) and academic writing tasks (data description + essay). General Training uses everyday English — notices, advertisements, letters, and work-related materials. Listening and Speaking are identical in both variants. Academic is required for university admission and most professional licensing; General Training is used for migration visas (Australia 189/190/491, Canada Express Entry PR, UK Skilled Worker).
What band do I need for a UK student visa?
UKVI requires IELTS Academic with a minimum of 5.5 in each component for most university entry routes (6.0–7.0 overall for most courses). Russell Group universities often require 6.5–7.0 overall with no skill below 6.0. Oxbridge and high-impact research programmes typically require 7.0–7.5 overall. Always confirm the exact requirement on your specific course and university page — requirements vary considerably between departments.
What band do I need for Canada Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker)?
IRCC maps IELTS to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) on a per-skill basis. For CLB 9 — which gives the maximum CRS English language bonus in Express Entry — you need: Listening ≥ 8.0, Reading ≥ 7.0, Writing ≥ 7.0, Speaking ≥ 7.0. Note that Listening requires 8.0, not 7.0. Many candidates score 7.0 overall but fail to reach CLB 9 because of a Listening shortfall. Target each component individually, not just the overall band.
Does the IELTS certificate expire?
Yes. IELTS results are valid for 2 years from the test date. Most immigration authorities (IRCC, DIBP, UKVI) and universities require that your test date falls within the 2-year window at the time of application. If your certificate has expired, you will need to re-sit the exam. Plan your test date so the certificate remains valid through your application deadline.
