Questions from Indian nurses
What German level do Indian nurses need for Germany?
Most German Bundesländer require B2 as the minimum level for nursing recognition (Berufsanerkennung). Some states and specialist hospital positions require C1. The required level depends on the state (Bundesland) where you will work and the type of nursing role.
Which German exam is accepted for nursing recognition in Germany?
The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or C1 is widely accepted. telc Deutsch B2/C1 Pflege (a healthcare-specific exam) is also accepted and increasingly preferred by hospital employers. Both are accepted by Anerkennungsbehörden across most German states.
How long does it take to learn German to B2 for nursing?
Most Indian nursing professionals reach B2 in 12–18 months with intensive study (1.5–2 hours daily). Those with prior exposure to European languages may progress faster. Structured mock tests help compress preparation time by identifying weak areas early.
Can I work in Germany while learning German?
With the Anerkennungspartnerschaft (recognition partnership) introduced in 2023, you can come to Germany and complete language training and the recognition process simultaneously. However, you must at least reach B2 before full recognition of your nursing qualification.
Is the German language exam held in India?
Yes. Official Goethe-Institut exams are conducted at centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Pune. telc exams are also available at selected centres. You do not need to travel to Germany to take the language exam.
