HSK 5 exam format — three timed sections

HSK 5 retains the three-section HSK 4 architecture but doubles the active vocabulary, adds ordering-for-coherence tasks in the reading section, and replaces the short sentence-reordering of HSK 4 with two genuine short-essay writing tasks. No speaking here either — HSKK 高级 is the separate advanced spoken exam.

45 items — vocabulary cloze, sentence ordering for narrative coherence, and longer-passage reading comprehension (300+ characters). Scored 0–100.

书写 (Writing)

40 min · 2 parts

10 items — eight sentence-construction tasks (use the given words to build a grammatical sentence) plus two essay-style tasks: a ~80-character narrative based on five given words, and a ~80-character description based on a photo prompt. AI-graded for coherence, character accuracy, and grammatical range.

Officially the pass is 180/300 overall — no formal sectional minimum at HSK 5. In practice though, universities and embassy recruiters look at the per-section breakdown. A 220/300 split as 90/90/40 reads weaker than a 200/300 split of 67/67/66.

HSK 5 is the de-facto minimum for Mandarin-taught Masters and PhD programmes at most reputable Chinese universities.

Chinese embassy / consulate roles in India

Locally engaged staff roles at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Delhi and Chinese consulates in Mumbai / Kolkata frequently require HSK 5.

Senior China-OEM corporate roles

Mid-to-senior client-facing roles at Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, BYD, CATL India operations typically expect HSK 5, especially for HQ-liaison positions.

Is HSK 5 enough for a Mandarin-medium Masters at a Chinese university?

For most provincial-tier universities, yes — HSK 5 is the published admission floor for Mandarin-medium Masters. For top-tier institutions (C9 League: Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, USTC, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing, Xi'an Jiao Tong), HSK 6 is preferred and often becomes the practical cut-off. Always confirm with the specific programme listing.

How long does it take to go from HSK 4 to HSK 5?

Typically 8–12 months of consistent study (5–7 hours per week) including 30–40 minutes of daily native-Mandarin audio. The biggest single jump is the writing section — HSK 4's sentence reordering becomes HSK 5's short essay. Most candidates underestimate this and underperform on 书写. Mock-driven preparation in the final 6–8 weeks is critical.

Does HSK 5 expire?

The certificate itself is a lifetime credential. For scholarship, visa, and admission purposes most authorities expect a result within the last 2 years. CSC Masters and PhD applications in particular routinely reject HSK 5 results older than 2 years. Plan a retake if your timing is tight.

What is the HSK 5 exam fee in India?

Approximately ₹3,500–₹4,500 in India for the paper-based HSK 5 at Confucius Institute centres. Internet-based HSK iBT is slightly cheaper. Pricing changes periodically — confirm on chinesetest.cn or with your chosen Confucius Institute centre before registering.

Should I take HSKK 高级 along with HSK 5?

Strongly recommended. HSKK 高级 (advanced spoken exam) is the speaking counterpart to HSK 5 / 6 and is increasingly mandatory for CSC Masters / PhD applications and for embassy-recruitment shortlists. It is administered as a 26-minute recorded speaking exam covering listen-and-repeat, prepared-talk, and answer-the-question tasks. Many candidates pair HSK 5 + HSKK 高级 in the same sitting.

Which HSK 5 section is hardest for Indian candidates?

By a wide margin: 书写 (writing). The two short-essay tasks demand active recall of ~80 characters from memory under time pressure — a skill rarely drilled in self-study. Listening is the second-hardest for candidates who only studied through written textbooks without native audio exposure. Reading tends to be the strongest section for Indian candidates because of strong grammar-translation foundations.

Is the new HSK 3.0 going to replace HSK 5?

Hanban / CLEC is rolling out a redesigned HSK 3.0 framework that re-bands the previous six levels into three stages of three levels each (total nine levels). Most exam centres in India and most CSC scholarship listings still reference the established HSK 2.0 structure described on this page. We will update guidance when the rollout reaches India's Confucius Institute network.
