The SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is one of the most accessible Spanish proficiency exams in the world. Unlike many other language certifications, SIELE has almost no barriers to entry. Here’s exactly who can take it — and what rules you need to know before registering.
General Eligibility: No Prerequisites
There are no educational qualifications, age restrictions, or nationality requirements to register for SIELE. The exam is open to:
- Any nationality
- Any age (minors may need parental consent — check local test center policy)
- Any educational background (no minimum degree or schooling required)
You do not need to be a student, a professional, or a native speaker of any language. SIELE tests your current Spanish ability, not your credentials.
Age Limit for SIELE
There is no upper age limit. Candidates of any age can take the exam. However, if you are under 18, some test centers may require a signed consent form from a parent or guardian. Contact your chosen center directly to confirm their policy for minors.

Education Requirements
SIELE does not require any specific level of education. You don’t need a high school diploma, a bachelor’s degree, or any certificate to register. The only thing that matters is your Spanish language proficiency — from A1 to C1 (the exam covers levels A1 through C1 of the CEFR).
Nationality and Residency
SIELE is a global exam. It is not tied to any specific country. You can take it:
- In Spain (any Instituto Cervantes center)
- In India (select test centers in major cities — check the official SIELE website for updated locations)
- In over 100 other countries worldwide
There is no requirement to be a resident of the country where you take the test. You can travel to any test center that offers SIELE.
Special Rules: Retakes and Score Validity
- Retaking the exam: You can take SIELE as many times as you want. There is no waiting period between attempts. However, you must pay the full fee each time.
- Score validity: SIELE scores are valid for 5 years from the date of the exam. After that, the certificate expires.
- Sending scores: You can send your scores to up to 5 institutions for free within 30 days of receiving your results. After that, a fee applies. Verify the current fee structure on the official SIELE portal — fees were last revised in early 2026.

Who Should NOT Take SIELE?
While almost anyone can take SIELE, it may not be the right choice if:
- You need a DELE certificate (SIELE and DELE are different — DELE is valid indefinitely, SIELE expires in 5 years)
- Your target institution or employer specifically requires DELE
- You are looking for a pass/fail exam (SIELE gives a numerical score and level, not a pass/fail)
How to Register
Registration is done online via the official SIELE website. You will need:
- A valid passport or national ID (check which IDs are accepted at your test center)
- A credit/debit card or other payment method accepted by the platform
- To select your test modality: SIELE Global (all four skills) or individual modules (reading, listening, writing, speaking)
Once registered, you will receive a confirmation with your test date, time, and location.
