HSK 4 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the fourth level of China’s standardised Chinese proficiency test, designed for learners who can discuss a wide range of topics in Chinese. Before you register, confirm you meet the eligibility requirements — they are straightforward but have a few nuances.
Who can take HSK 4?
HSK 4 is open to all non-native Chinese speakers. There is no age limit, no formal education requirement, and no nationality restriction. The test assesses language ability, not academic knowledge.
Non-native speakers only
- Native Chinese speakers (including those from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macau) cannot take HSK 4 for certification.
- Heritage speakers who grew up speaking Chinese at home but were educated outside Chinese-medium schools are generally allowed — check with your test centre if unsure.
No minimum age
- There is no lower or upper age limit. However, HSK 4 content assumes cognitive maturity to handle abstract topics (e.g., social issues, workplace scenarios). Most candidates are 16 or older.
- Younger learners may still register, but the test may be challenging without targeted preparation.
No education prerequisite
- You do not need a high school diploma, college degree, or any specific coursework.
- HSK 4 corresponds to approximately 800–1,200 hours of study (or about 2–4 years of part-time learning), but this is a guideline, not a rule.
Nationality and residency rules
- The test is open to all nationalities. Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepali, and other South Asian candidates can register without additional documentation.
- No Indian visa or residency permit is required to take HSK 4 in India. If you plan to take the test in China, you will need a valid visa (e.g., tourist visa) for the test date.
- For candidates taking the test outside their home country: bring your passport and any local ID required by the test centre.
Special category rules
Candidates with disabilities
- Test centres provide reasonable accommodations (extra time, large-print papers, oral assistance) if you submit a request at least 30 days before the test date.
- Documentation from a qualified medical professional is required.
Candidates from Chinese-medium schools
- If you completed secondary or higher education in a Chinese-medium school (even outside China), you may be considered a heritage speaker. Some centres may restrict HSK 4 registration. Contact the official HSK test centre in your region for a case-by-case decision.
Test centre-specific policies
- Individual test centres (e.g., in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai) may impose local rules. Always confirm with your chosen centre before paying.

Documents you need to register
- A valid passport (or government-issued photo ID — accepted in India: Aadhaar card, voter ID, driving licence).

Can you retake HSK 4?
- Yes. There is no limit on attempts. You can retake the test in any future session.
- Scores are valid for two years from the test date.
Important: No automatic exemptions
- Passing HSK 3 does not automatically qualify you for HSK 4. You must register specifically for HSK 4.
- HSK 4 scores are not transferable to other Chinese proficiency tests (e.g., TOCFL, BCT).
