The Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) exam is the highest-level Cambridge English Qualification. It proves you can communicate with the fluency and precision of an educated native speaker. Exam Overview
The CPE exam has four papers: Reading & Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Total exam time is about 4 hours. Your final score is an average of all four papers, each contributing equally (25%). No paper has a higher weight than another — so you need balanced preparation.
Reading & Use of English (Paper 1)

Writing (Paper 2)

Task 1 (Compulsory): Write an essay based on two given points and a third of your own. Task 2 (Choice): You choose one from: article, report, review, letter/email, or proposal.
Marking criteria (each task): Content (25%), Communicative Achievement (25%), Organisation (25%), Language (25%).
Study tips:
- Practise writing under timed conditions — 45 minutes per task.
- For Task 1, always include a clear thesis, balanced arguments, and a conclusion.
- For Task 2, read sample answers for each format. Know the conventions: a report uses headings, a review has a personal tone.
- Use a wide range of linking devices (furthermore, nevertheless, consequently).
Listening (Paper 3)

- Listen to academic lectures, TED Talks, and BBC Radio 4 at 1.25x speed to challenge yourself.
- For Part 2, practise predicting the type of word you need (noun, verb, number, etc.) before you hear the audio.
- In Part 4, read the options carefully before listening — you'll hear 5 speakers and must match them to 10 statements.
Speaking (Paper 4)

How the Score Works
Each paper gives you a raw score, converted to a Cambridge English Scale score (range: 180–230). To pass at C2 level, you need a minimum of 200 overall. Scores between 180 and 199 are reported as C1 level. The highest grade (Grade A) requires 220+.
Scoring breakdown:
- Grade A: 220–230 (C2)
- Grade B: 213–219 (C2)
- Grade C: 200–212 (C2)
- Level C1: 180–199
Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
- Neglecting Use of English: Many candidates focus only on Reading. But Parts 1–4 require specific grammar and vocabulary work — don't skip them.
- Poor time management in Writing: Finish Task 1 in 45 minutes. If you run over, Task 2 will suffer.
- Not reading instructions in Listening: Each part has different instructions — misreading can lose easy marks.
- Memorising speeches for Speaking: Examiners detect rehearsed answers. Be natural and respond to the prompt.
