The visa-grade A1 certificate Germany uses internally

Issued by telc GmbH (Telc Language Test gGmbH, Frankfurt), telc Deutsch A1 certifies CEFR level A1 — the Breakthrough stage — in four independently-scored modules across listening, reading + grammar, writing and speaking.

Conducting body: telc GmbH (Telc Language Test gGmbH), Frankfurt am Main.
CEFR level: A1 — Breakthrough (the entry point on the Common European Framework).
Modules: Hörverstehen (listening) · Leseverstehen + Sprachbausteine (reading + grammar) · Schreiben (writing) · Sprechen (speaking).
Format: Paper-based written exam + face-to-face paired oral with two examiners.
Duration: ~70 minutes written, ~15 minutes oral (per pair).
Pass mark: 60% in the written aggregate AND 60% in the oral — both required.

telc Deutsch A1 vs Goethe-Zertifikat A1 — which one should I take?+

Both are CEFR A1 and both are accepted by German embassies worldwide for the Ehegattennachzug (spouse family-reunion) visa. In practice: Goethe A1 is more visible at Goethe-Institut centres abroad (especially India), while telc is the default A1 accepted by Ausländerbehörden, Volkshochschulen and German employers once you are inside Germany. If you plan to settle in Germany and continue to A2/B1 via the state Integrationskurs, telc is the natural choice — most VHS courses end with a telc-format test.

Will telc Deutsch A1 be accepted for my family-reunion visa?+

Yes. The German Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) accepts both telc Deutsch A1 and Start Deutsch 1 (Goethe A1) as proof of basic German for spouse and family-reunification visa applications. Always cross-check the latest list published on the German embassy / consulate website for your country before booking.

What is the pass mark on telc Deutsch A1?+

You need at least 60% in the written exam (Hörverstehen + Leseverstehen + Sprachbausteine + Schreiben combined, scaled to 75 points) AND at least 60% in the oral exam (45 points). The written and oral are weighted independently — failing one means you only retake that part within the validity window.

Is the speaking exam done solo or with a partner?+

telc A1 Sprechen is conducted in pairs. Two candidates sit with two examiners. Part 1 is self-introduction, Part 2 is information-asking (you ask your partner short questions like 'Wo wohnen Sie?'), Part 3 is a small everyday request ('Können Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen?'). This pair format is one of the biggest practical differences from Goethe A1 and is why we drill paired role-play in our mocks.

How long is the telc Deutsch A1 exam?+

About 85 minutes total. Written: Hörverstehen 20 min, Leseverstehen + Sprachbausteine 25 min, Schreiben 20 min — plus a short pause. Oral: ~15 minutes per pair (no separate preparation time). Total time at the test centre is usually 2.5-3 hours including check-in and instructions.

How long is the certificate valid?+

telc GmbH does not put a formal expiry on the certificate. However, German embassies for visa purposes and Ausländerbehörden typically accept A1 results from the last 1-2 years. For Ehegattennachzug specifically, most missions ask for a test sat within the previous 12 months.

How much study time should I plan for telc Deutsch A1?+

Roughly 80-100 guided learning hours from absolute zero — about 8-12 weeks at a relaxed pace, or 4-6 weeks intensive. Add 15-20 hours of pure mock practice in the final two weeks.
