Understanding Your IELTS General Training Scorecard
Your scorecard shows four individual band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an Overall Band Score โ the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
Band Score Ranges
- Band 9: Expert user
- Band 8: Very good user
- Band 7: Good user
- Band 6: Competent user
- Band 5: Modest user
- Band 4: Limited user
What Each Section Tests
- Listening (40 questions, 30 minutes): Four recorded monologues and conversations.
- Reading (40 questions, 60 minutes): Three long passages from books, newspapers, or magazines.
- Writing (60 minutes): Two tasks โ a letter (Task 1) and an essay (Task 2).
- Speaking (11โ14 minutes): A face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.
Next Steps After Receiving Your Results
Once you have your TRF, here's what to do:
- Check your target country's minimum band requirements. For example, Canada's Express Entry typically requires CLB 7 (equivalent to IELTS 6.0 in each skill) for skilled workers. Australia's General Skilled Migration often needs at least 6.0 in each band.
- Apply to your chosen visa program with your TRF number. Most immigration authorities accept electronic verification through the IELTS Test Report Form Verification Service.
- If you scored below your target, consider retaking the test. Many candidates improve by focusing on their weakest skill โ often Writing or Speaking.
