Understanding Your Scorecard
Your IELTS Academic scorecard shows four individual band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an overall band score. Each band ranges from 0 to 9, in half-point increments.
What the bands mean
- 9: Expert user
- 8: Very good user
- 7: Good user
- 6: Competent user
- 5: Modest user
- 4: Limited user
- 3: Extremely limited user
- 2: Intermittent user
- 1: Non-user
- 0: Did not attempt
Overall band score
This is the average of the four individual scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. For example, if you score 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 7.0, your overall is 7.0.
Common score requirements
Most universities and immigration programs ask for an overall band of 6.0–7.5, with no skill below 6.0. However, requirements vary. Always check the official website of your target institution or immigration authority.
Next Steps After Your Result
If you achieved your target score
- Order additional TRFs: You can request up to 5 free copies sent to institutions (within 30 days of your test). After that, a fee applies — verify current rates on the official portal.
- Submit to universities/immigration: Use the TRF number to verify your score electronically.
- Celebrate and prepare: Your next step is visa or admission paperwork.
If you need a higher score
- Re-evaluation (Enquiry on Results): You can request a re-mark within 6 weeks of your test. Fees apply — refunded if your score changes. Check official site for current charges.
- Retake the test: You can sit for IELTS Academic as many times as you want. There’s no limit. Plan a study gap of at least 2–3 weeks.
- Identify weak areas: Use your score breakdown to focus on specific skills. For example, if Writing is low, practice essay structure and grammar.

Important Dates & Validity
- Result validity: IELTS Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.
- Result release: Typically 13 days after the test. Some computer-delivered tests may release in 3–5 days.
- TRF delivery: Physical TRFs take 3–5 business days to reach you after results are online.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not checking the portal on release day: Results are posted at midnight. Don’t rely on email alone.
- Misreading the overall band: It’s an average, not a sum. Double-check your calculation.
- Ignoring skill-specific requirements: A 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing might disqualify you from certain programs.
- Delaying TRF requests: Free copies are time-limited. Send them early.
