What is IELTS Academic?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic is a globally recognized English proficiency test designed for individuals planning to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels in English-speaking institutions. It assesses your ability to understand and use academic English in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Unlike the General Training version, IELTS Academic uses texts and tasks that reflect academic contexts—such as journal articles, graphs, and formal essays. The test is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS, and Cambridge Assessment English, and is accepted by over 11,000 organizations worldwide.
Your IELTS Academic score is reported on a 9-band scale, with 9 being an expert user. Most universities require a band score between 6.0 and 7.5, depending on the course and institution. Scores are valid for two years.
Exam Format at a Glance
The test is divided into four sections, taken in one sitting (total time: 2 hours 45 minutes). The Speaking test may be scheduled on a different day within a week of the other sections.
- Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time): 4 sections, 40 questions. Recordings include conversations and monologues in academic and social contexts.
- Reading (60 minutes): 3 long passages (from books, journals, newspapers), 40 questions. Task types include multiple choice, matching, sentence completion, and more.
- Writing (60 minutes): 2 tasks. Task 1: describe a graph, table, chart, or diagram (150 words min). Task 2: write an essay in response to a point of view or problem (250 words min).
- Speaking (11–14 minutes): 3 parts. Part 1: introduction and interview (familiar topics). Part 2: long turn (1-minute preparation, 1–2 minutes speaking). Part 3: two-way discussion (abstract ideas related to Part 2).
Scoring: Each section is scored from 0–9 in half-band increments. The overall band score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half-band.
