The four TestDaF modules

Computer-based across all four. Audio plays once for the bulk of the Hörverstehen items — note-taking is non-negotiable.

Leseverstehen (Reading)

60 min · 3 parts

Three short academic texts — a campus magazine piece, a longer journalistic article and a scientific text. Tests global, detailed and selective reading. Around 30 items in matching, multiple-choice and assignment formats.

Hörverstehen (Listening)

40 min · 3 parts

An everyday conversation, an interview or radio segment, and a short academic lecture. Plays once only (Part 3 plays twice). Tests note-taking and global comprehension of authentic academic German.

Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Writing)

60 min · 1 task

One long, structured essay. You describe a statistic / graph and then argue a position on the topic. ~600–800 words. Tests academic structure, coherence, range of vocabulary and grammatical accuracy.

Mündlicher Ausdruck (Speaking)

30 min · 7 parts

Seven recorded tasks — gathering information, describing a graph, weighing alternatives, giving a hypothetical opinion. Computer-based — you speak into a microphone, no examiner present. Tests authentic university communication.

How TDN scoring works

TestDaF reports a separate TDN level for each of the four modules. Your certificate shows four numbers, not one overall grade.

TDN 5

Mastery — clearly above the C1 threshold. Accepted by every German university for every programme, including medicine and law.

TDN 4

Standard university entry. Required by most public German universities for Bachelor's and Master's degrees taught in German.

TDN 3

Provisional / conditional admission for some programmes; insufficient for most full-degree German-taught study.

Who needs TestDaF

Bachelor's / Master's applicants

German-taught degree programmes. Most public universities need TDN 4 in all four modules (a few accept TDN 4 in three + TDN 3 in one).

PhD applicants

Variable — research-degree students often need only TDN 3 or no language certificate at all; check your prospective supervisor's requirement.

Studienkolleg applicants

Foundation-year admission usually needs TDN 3 + a placement test in subject content.

DAAD scholarship applicants

Most fully-funded DAAD scholarships require TDN 4 minimum across all four modules.

Frequently asked questions

How is TestDaF different from Goethe C1?

TestDaF is computer-based, academic-only, and reports a per-skill TDN score (3/4/5). Goethe C1 is examiner-graded, generalist, and reports a pass/fail with band. For German university admission TestDaF TDN 4 is the most common requirement. Goethe C1 is accepted but less universal.

Is TDN 4 in all four modules really required?

For most public German universities — yes. Some accept TDN 4 in three modules + TDN 3 in the fourth (often Speaking or Writing). Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Heidelberg and Freiburg are stricter; smaller universities tend to be more flexible. Always check the specific Studiengang's requirement.

How long does the score stay valid?

TestDaF scores don't expire formally, but most universities want a certificate issued within the last two years. After two years they may ask you to re-test or supplement with a recent placement.

Where can I take TestDaF in India?

Goethe-Institut centres in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai run TestDaF ~6 times a year. Examination fee is around ₹17,500–₹19,000 in India (2026). Slots fill 6–8 weeks before the date.

How does the speaking module work without an examiner?

You sit at a computer with a headset. The screen shows seven scenarios; for each, you have prep time (sometimes only 30 seconds) and then a fixed window to record your spoken answer. The recordings are sent to TestDaF-Institut and graded centrally. You never speak to a live examiner.

Can I retake just one module if I miss TDN 4 in one skill?

No — TestDaF doesn't offer per-module retakes like telc does. If you fall short on one skill you re-sit the whole exam. This is one reason candidates often choose telc C1 Hochschule instead — telc lets you retake individual modules.
