What DELF B1 Production Orale tests
The B1 speaking section certifies you can sustain a conversation, handle everyday problems, and express and justify an opinion. This is the last section of the day, run one-on-one with a certified examiner, and it lasts 15 minutes total — the longest of the four DELF B1 sections.
Two of the three tasks require preparation time. You get 10 minutes before entering the room to work on Task 3, the opinion monologue. Tasks 1 and 2 are handled on the spot.
Format & the three tasks
| Task | What you do | Time | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Entretien dirigé | Guided interview — introduce yourself, discuss your studies, work, hobbies. | ~2–3 min | /4 |
| 2 · Exercice en interaction | Role-play a realistic situation — resolving a problem, negotiating, requesting help. | ~3–4 min | /4 |
| 3 · Expression d’un point de vue | Draw a short text; give a 3-minute monologue expressing and defending your opinion. | ~5–7 min | /6 |

How the 25 marks split
| Criterion | Marks | What earns them |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | 4 | Comfort with basic personal exchange, longer responses than A2. |
| Task 2 | 4 | Handling the role-play scenario; polite forms and initiative. |
| Task 3 | 6 | Position stated, at least 2 arguments defended, structured close. |
| Lexical range | 3 | Vocabulary for everyday and semi-formal topics. |
| Morphosyntax | 5 | Complex sentences — subordinates, conditional, subjunctive one-off. |
| Phonology | 3 | Rhythm and prosody; some intonation control. |
Strategy for the three tasks
Task 3 carries 6 of the 25 marks and is where a strong candidate separates from an average one. Read the short text twice in your prep window: the first read for the topic, the second for your position. Then draft a 4-part outline — position, argument A, argument B, closing question. Do not memorise sentences; memorise the shape.
Task 2 rewards initiative. If the examiner sets a hotel problem, do not wait to be led — take the first turn: ‘Bonjour, j’ai réservé une chambre mais…’. That first move is worth two grid points on its own.
For the morphosyntax block, aim to use at least one ‘si + imparfait, conditionnel’ construction across the section — ‘Si j’avais plus de temps, je préférerais…’. It is the single most-rewarded structure at B1.

Common mistakes that cap you at 15/25
- Turning Task 3 into a summary of the text. You are asked for your position on the topic, not a précis of the article.
- Waiting silently at the start of Task 2. Taking the first line signals confidence and earns interaction marks.
- One-tense speaking. B1 expects present + past + future + one conditional or subjunctive within a 15-minute test.
- Reading Task 3 notes verbatim. Notes are prompts, not a script — the examiner marks down monotone delivery.
- Ignoring the closing question at the end of Task 3. A short ‘Et vous, qu’en pensez-vous ?’ invites the follow-up debate and lifts interaction marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is DELF B1 Production Orale in total?
The full session runs 15 minutes of live speaking — roughly 2–3 minutes for Task 1, 3–4 minutes for Task 2, and 5–7 minutes for Task 3. Add 10 minutes of preparation time beforehand, reserved for Task 3 only.
What text length appears in DELF B1 Task 3?
A short document of 100–200 words — usually a magazine article, opinion piece, or forum discussion. It is a starting point for your opinion, not something you are asked to summarise or analyse in detail.
Do I need a French accent to pass DELF B1 speaking?
No. Phonology marks reward rhythm, intonation and intelligibility — not sounding native. A clear Indian-French accent with correct sentence stress scores full marks regularly.
Is DELF B1 speaking harder than DELF A2?
Yes, meaningfully. The role-play is longer and less scripted, and Task 3 requires a defended opinion — a shape that does not appear at A2. Most candidates who cleared A2 in 3 months need 4–6 months more to be ready for B1.
