DELF B2 Production Orale: Presenting and Defending a Point of View

DELF B2 Production Orale is a 20-minute session — a 10-minute exposé defending a position drawn from a short document, followed by a 10-minute débat with the examiner. You get 30 minutes of preparation. Scored out of 25 across presentation, interaction and language.

What DELF B2 Production Orale tests

DELF B2 speaking assesses whether you can construct an argument, defend it against pushback, and use French at CEFR B2 — the level at which most French universities accept international admissions. It is the most argumentative of the DELF diplomas and the biggest jump up from B1.

You draw one of two short documents (150–300 words) at the start of the preparation window. In 30 minutes you build a plan around a problématique of your choosing, then present for ~10 minutes and defend for ~10 more.

How the 25 marks split

Criterion Marks What examiners look for
Presentation (exposé) 5 Clear problématique, structured plan, argued conclusion.
Interaction (débat) 5 Sustained exchange; reformulate, defend, concede where sensible.
Lexical range 4 Nuanced vocabulary; press-article register.
Morphosyntax 6 Complex structures — subjunctive, conditional, relative clauses.
Phonology 3 Rhythm and prosody at near-native pace.
Coherence & cohesion 2 Clean transitions, no false starts.

The prep-window strategy that moves you from 15 to 20

The 30 minutes divides sensibly into 5–15–10: 5 minutes reading and choosing your position, 15 minutes on the plan and examples, 10 minutes drafting the opening and closing plus rehearsing transitions aloud. Candidates who split time evenly across the doc over-read and under-plan.

The single biggest lever on the exposé mark is announcing a problématique — a question, not a summary — within the first 90 seconds. ‘Nous allons voir…’ is weak; ‘Comment concilier X et Y dans le contexte actuel ?’ is strong.

For the débat, prepare five pushback openers — ‘Certes, mais…’, ‘Il est vrai que… néanmoins…’, ‘On pourrait objecter que…’, ‘Vous soulevez un point important, cependant…’, ‘Ce n’est pas tout à fait exact…’. Deploy any two and you unlock the interaction band.

Common mistakes

  • Summarising the source document. The examiner has read it — they want your position, structured.
  • Reading your notes verbatim during the exposé. Interaction and phonology marks drop together.
  • Neutral, opinion-free content. B2 rewards taking a position and defending it — ‘on peut dire que…’ is not a position.
  • Register slips. ‘Du coup’, ‘genre’, ‘j’sais pas’ are automatic caps on lexical range.
  • Long silences during the débat. A short filler — ‘Permettez-moi de préciser…’ — beats five seconds of hesitation.

Frequently Asked Questions
