What DELF A2 Production Orale tests
DELF A2 speaking asks you to hold a short exchange on a familiar everyday topic — family, work, travel, city life, food, health. At CEFR A2 the examiner still speaks slowly, but expects you to string sentences together with basic connectors and switch tense between present, passé composé and futur proche.
The section runs 6 to 8 minutes of live speaking plus 10 minutes of preparation time reserved for Task 3. Task 1 is spontaneous; Task 2 begins with you drawing one of several topic cards on the spot.
Format & the three tasks
| Task | What you do | Time | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Entretien dirigé | Guided interview about you — hobbies, weekly routine, recent trip. | ~2 min | /4 |
| 2 · Monologue suivi | Draw a topic (e.g. ‘ta ville’), speak for ~2 min without interruption. | ~2 min | /5 |
| 3 · Exercice en interaction | Role-play with an unexpected complication — book a hotel, then it’s fully booked. | ~3 min | /5 |

How the 25 marks split
| Criterion | Marks | What examiners look for |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | 4 | Ability to answer everyday questions with 2–3 sentence responses. |
| Task 2 | 5 | A structured 2-minute monologue with intro, points, closing. |
| Task 3 | 5 | Handling a transactional exchange plus an unexpected turn. |
| Lexical range | 3 | Vocabulary breadth for daily-life topics. |
| Morphosyntax | 5 | Present + passé composé + one more tense in the same response. |
| Phonology | 3 | Intelligibility across your responses. |
Strategy that reliably moves you from 12 to 18
Task 2 is where most candidates cap themselves. A 2-minute monologue feels long — silence eats marks. Prepare a 4-block structure for any topic: introduction (10 s), first point with example (40 s), second point with example (40 s), personal opinion or closing (30 s). Rehearsed on three topics, it transfers to any card you draw.
For Task 3, expect the complication and prepare a small toolkit of reactions: ‘Ah, c’est dommage… dans ce cas, est-ce que vous avez… ?’ or ‘Est-ce qu’il est possible de… à la place ?’ You lose 2 marks if you freeze; you gain 2 if you propose an alternative.
The morphosyntax block rewards tense variety. In every task, mix at least present + passé composé. In Task 2, add one imparfait (‘Avant, je préférais…’) and you have secured most of the grammar marks before content is judged.

Common mistakes that cap you at 15
- Only using the present tense in Task 2. Absence of passé composé signals sub-A2 command and caps grammar at 2/5.
- Reading your Task 3 notes verbatim. Interaction and phonology drop by 2 marks each.
- Skipping the greeting and closing in Task 3 — ‘Bonjour’, ‘Merci, au revoir’ are free task marks.
- Answering Task 1 in single sentences. Every ‘oui’ costs a mark; expand with a why or example.
- Freezing when the examiner adds the Task 3 complication. Even a filler — ‘Ah bon, je vois…’ — beats five seconds of silence.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the DELF A2 speaking test?
The interview is 6 to 8 minutes of live speaking. You get 10 minutes of preparation time beforehand, but only for Task 3, the role-play. Tasks 1 and 2 are spontaneous or drawn on the spot.
What topics come up in DELF A2 Task 2?
Everyday themes — your city, your weekend, holidays, sport, food, transport, work or studies. You draw from a small set of cards. Preparing 5–6 practised monologues covering these topics prepares you for almost any prompt.
Do I need to use the passé composé in DELF A2 speaking?
Yes — expected at A2 and part of the morphosyntax grid. Absence of past-tense verbs typically caps that block at 2 out of 5, which is enough to drop your total below the 15-mark competitive band.
Can I take notes into the DELF A2 speaking room?
Only for Task 3. The 10-minute preparation is Task 3 only — you take those notes in with you. Tasks 1 and 2 are done from memory; you do not receive the Task 2 topic card until it is time to speak.
