TORFL Exam Format Explained: Subtests, Levels and Scoring

The TORFL exam format (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language, ТРКИ) is consistent across six levels, from Elementary (A1) to TORFL-4 (C2). Each level is built from five separate subtests.

The five subtests

  • Reading (Чтение) · Listening (Аудирование) · Lexis & Grammar (Лексика. Грамматика)
  • Writing (Письмо) · Speaking (Говорение)

Levels

Elementary – A1 · Basic – A2 · TORFL-1 – B1 · TORFL-2 – B2 · TORFL-3 – C1 · TORFL-4 – C2.

How TORFL is scored

Each subtest is scored on its own and you generally need at least 66% in every one to pass the level. A strong reading result will not compensate for a failed writing subtest, which is why practising each part matters.
