How TOPIK Scoring Works
TOPIK uses a total score system where your level is determined by the total marks you achieve across all sections, combined with minimum section scores in TOPIK II writing. Understanding the scoring structure helps you plan how many marks to target in each section based on your strengths and weaknesses, rather than studying all skills equally.
TOPIK I Scoring (Levels 1–2)
TOPIK I has two sections: listening (듣기, 40 questions × 2 marks = 80 points) and reading (읽기, 40 questions × 2 marks = 80 points). Total marks: 200. Level 1 is awarded for a total score of 80–139. Level 2 is awarded for a total score of 140–200. There is no writing section and no minimum section threshold — only the total score determines your level.
TOPIK II Scoring (Levels 3–6)
TOPIK II has three sections. Listening (듣기): 50 questions × 2 marks = 100 points. Writing (쓰기): 4 tasks with partial marking = 100 points. Reading (읽기): 50 questions × 2 marks = 100 points. Total: 300 points. Level assignment: 120–149 = Level 3, 150–189 = Level 4, 190–229 = Level 5, 230–300 = Level 6. Critically, there is no minimum section threshold in TOPIK II — a very strong reading and listening performance can compensate for a weaker writing section, within limits.
Writing Score Breakdown
The TOPIK II writing section allocates marks as follows. Tasks 51 and 52 (sentence completion): 10 marks each = 20 total. Task 53 (short essay, 200 characters): 30 marks. Task 54 (long essay, 600 characters): 50 marks. Writing is scored on content appropriateness, vocabulary, grammar accuracy, and coherence. Task 54 (the long essay) is the single highest-weighted item in the writing section — strong performance here has a disproportionate impact on total writing score.
Score Strategy by Target Level
If targeting Level 3 (120–149 total), you can reach this target with moderate listening and reading performance and a basic writing score. A strategy: target 40/100 listening, 40/100 reading, 40/100 writing. If targeting Level 5 (190–229 total), you need strong performance across all sections: target 65/100 listening, 65/100 reading, 60/100 writing. How to Check Your TOPIK Results
TOPIK results are available online approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the exam. Log in to the official TOPIK website (topik.go.kr) with your application number and date of birth. Your score report shows total marks and section marks. Physical certificates are mailed to your registered address for candidates tested outside Korea within approximately 3 months. Digital certificates can be downloaded from the TOPIK website for immediate use.
