About the SIELE Reading Module
The SIELE reading module (Lectura) assesses your ability to understand written Spanish texts from a variety of sources and registers. Texts range from informal messages and social media posts to newspaper articles, formal reports, and literary extracts. The module contains multiple tasks, each testing a different reading skill: identifying main ideas, locating specific information, understanding vocabulary in context, and interpreting implicit meaning.
Task Types in the SIELE Reading Module

Strategy 1: Skim Before You Read

Skimming is particularly useful in matching tasks where you need to connect headings to paragraphs.
Strategy 2: Read Questions Before the Text
For multiple choice and true/false tasks, read the questions before the text. This primes your brain to notice relevant information during the first read. Underline key words in the questions and scan for them as you read. Be careful with true/false/not mentioned tasks: the not-mentioned option requires you to confirm that the information is absent, not just absent from what you remember.
Strategy 3: Understand Vocabulary From Context
You will encounter unfamiliar words in the reading module. Do not spend time trying to recall their definition. Instead, use context clues: the words around an unfamiliar term often indicate its meaning. Prefixes and suffixes in Spanish are consistent, so break compound words into parts. Avoid choosing an answer based solely on a familiar word appearing in both the question and the text — this is a common distractor trap.
Strategy 4: Manage Your Time
The SIELE reading module has a time limit. Allocate roughly one and a half to two minutes per question. If you cannot answer a question, mark it and return later. Never leave a question blank — there is no penalty for guessing in most SIELE tasks, so an educated guess is better than no answer.
