DELF B1 Scoring: How the 100 Marks Split & What Each Band Unlocks

DELF B1 uses the standard DELF grid — 25 marks per section, 50/100 to pass overall, 5/25 minimum per section. B1 is the level unlocking French residency requirements and Quebec Immigration (PSTQ programme). Score bands map directly to what candidates can actually do on the day.

How the 100 marks split

Section Marks Weight
Compréhension de l’oral /25 25%
Compréhension des écrits /25 25%
Production écrite /25 25%
Production orale /25 25%
TOTAL /100 100%

The two pass conditions

Standard DELF logic: 50/100 total plus 5/25 minimum on every section. Fail either condition and the diploma is withheld. Section scores below 5 cannot be compensated by strong performance elsewhere.

The most common near-miss at B1 is a total in the 47–49 band with all sections at 12–13. Prevention is a diagnostic mock at the 6-week mark that identifies weak sections early enough to drill.

What each score band signals at B1

Band per section What it means
5–9 Sub-B1 — struggling with basic argument or extended interaction on that skill.
10–14 Functional B1 pass — safe if total ≥ 50 and no section < 5.
15–19 Solid B1 with headroom into early B2. B2 exam within realistic 4–6 month reach.
20–25 Near-perfect B1. B2 within 3 months if all sections are in this band.

What DELF B1 unlocks

For Indian candidates, DELF B1 is the level with the broadest practical value. It is the CEFR requirement for French naturalisation (long-stay residency to citizenship), for Quebec’s Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés (PSTQ) at the language-competence level, and for some French undergraduate admissions in less selective programmes.

For university admission at selective institutions, B1 is usually insufficient — Sciences Po, ENS and most master’s programmes require B2 or C1. But B1 opens a much wider set of pathways than A2 does, and is often the point at which French becomes a genuine second working language rather than a survival tool.

How results and appeals work

Results arrive 4–6 weeks after the exam session. You receive per-section scores plus the total. The attestation de réussite is the email PDF that lands first; the physical diploma follows 2–3 months later.

Appeals are possible within 60 days of the result if you believe a section was misscored. Success rates are low (~5%) and the appeal fee is non-refundable. If you narrowly miss the pass, the reliable path is a re-sit at the next session — there is no minimum gap between attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DELF B1 pass mark?

50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on every individual section. Same thresholds as DELF A1/A2, but the tasks are pitched at CEFR B1 — extended argument, opinion-defence, and longer reading texts.

Is DELF B1 accepted for French residency?

Yes — B1 is the CEFR requirement for naturalisation and long-stay pathways in France. Most other DELF/DALF certifications (B2, C1, C2) also satisfy the requirement, but B1 is the minimum accepted level.

Is DELF B1 enough for Quebec Immigration?

For the Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés (PSTQ), B1 is often the minimum language competence. But CRS-style scoring rewards higher levels — B2 or C1 unlock more points. Check the current PSTQ grid for exact thresholds.

How long does DELF B1 stay valid?

For life. Once awarded, France Éducation international never expires the diploma. This differs from TEF/TCF Canada, whose scores expire after 2 years for immigration purposes.
