What DELF B1 tests
DELF B1 certifies the CEFR ‘threshold’ level — you can handle most situations in a French-speaking environment, express opinions on familiar topics, and produce simple connected text on subjects of personal interest. B1 is the level unlocking French residency and Quebec Immigration language requirements.
The syllabus has not changed for 2026. One paper for the three written sections (~1h45), plus a separate live oral. Both usually the same day at an accredited centre.
The four sections at a glance
| Section | French name | Duration | Marks | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | Compréhension de l’oral | ~25 min | /25 | 3 recordings (news brief, interview extract, longer informational), each played TWICE. MCQ + short-answer. |
| Reading | Compréhension des écrits | 35 min | /25 | 2 exercises — comparative-reading table + a 500-word article. MCQ + T/F+justification + short-answer. |
| Writing | Production écrite | 45 min | /25 | One text of 160–180 words — opinion piece in specified format (letter, forum, blog, personal account). |
| Speaking | Production orale | 15 min + 10 min prep | /25 | Three tasks — guided interview, role-play, opinion monologue from a short text trigger. |

Section-by-section prep priorities
Listening at B1 is where many strong-reading candidates first struggle — recordings are 60–120 seconds each at close-to-natural pace, and the ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions test connector-catching skills that reading practice does not train.
Reading uses a comparative-reading exercise (4 profiles vs 8 listings) that is unfamiliar to A2-graduates — the format matters as much as vocabulary, and 3–5 full practice runs are essential.
Writing is the section most under-trained at self-study. The 160–180 word opinion piece with format compliance (letter vs forum vs blog vs personal account) is a specific skill; without 6+ full mocks it caps at ~14/25.
Speaking Task 3 (opinion from a short text) is the biggest jump from A2 — the 3-minute defended-opinion monologue does not appear at lower levels. It carries 6/25 marks and is where the strong candidates separate.
CEFR B1 competencies the syllabus expects
- Present, passé composé, imparfait, futur simple — all four required in the same test.
- Conditional (si + imparfait, conditionnel) — high-yield signal at B1; used in Writing and Speaking.
- One subjunctive per productive text — ‘il faut que’, ‘je pense que’. Absence caps morphosyntax.
- Connectors from 3+ categories — addition, opposition, cause. Simple ‘et’ + ‘mais’ reads as A2.
- Vocabulary of ~3000 most-frequent French words + everyday topic-specific terms.

How much of the syllabus can you skip? Very little
The elimination scoring (5/25 per section) means you cannot skip prep for your weakest section. Most B1 candidates who miss the pass do so on Compréhension de l’oral because listening is the section that requires the specific skill (natural-pace comprehension) that self-study routines least effectively build.
The single highest-return study block at B1 is 15 minutes daily on RFI’s ‘Journal en français facile’ with transcript cross-check. It hits Listening directly and vocabulary + comprehension indirectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is DELF B1 in total?
1 hour 45 minutes for the written paper: 25 minutes Listening, 35 minutes Reading, 45 minutes Writing. Plus a separate 15-minute Production orale with 10 minutes of preparation. Both usually the same day at the exam centre.
What is the DELF B1 pass mark?
50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on every individual section. Both conditions must be met simultaneously — the elimination floor cannot be compensated by a strong overall score.
Has the DELF B1 syllabus changed for 2026?
No — the format last changed in 2020. The 2026 sessions use the same 4-section structure, task types, and marking grid. There is no announced change for 2027 either.
What French level do I need to attempt DELF B1?
Solid A2 with 150+ hours of B1 preparation. Candidates jumping straight from A1 to B1 typically miss the pass on Writing and Speaking, where the argument-defence skills require intermediate command not built at A2.
