DELF B2 Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026: The University-Entry French Test

DELF B2 is a 2-hour 30-minute paper with four sections — Compréhension de l’oral (30 min), Compréhension des écrits (60 min), Production écrite (60 min) — plus a separate Production orale (20 min + 30 min prep). B2 is the level most French universities accept for undergraduate admission.

What DELF B2 tests

DELF B2 certifies the CEFR ‘vantage’ level — you can interact fluently with native speakers on a wide range of topics, understand complex text and argue positions in speech and writing. B2 is the language-competence floor for most French university admissions and for many mid-skill professional roles.

The syllabus is unchanged for 2026. One paper for the three written sections (2h30 total), plus a separate 20-minute Production orale with 30 minutes of preparation — usually the same day at an accredited centre.

The four sections at a glance

Section French name Duration Marks What you do
Listening Compréhension de l’oral 30 min /25 2 recordings — short news (2 min, played TWICE) + long interview or debate (5–6 min, played ONCE).
Reading Compréhension des écrits 60 min /25 2 long texts (~750 words each) — one informational, one argumentative. 10–12 questions per text.
Writing Production écrite 60 min /25 One argued text of 250+ words in a specified format (letter, forum, formal request).
Speaking Production orale 20 min + 30 min prep /25 10-minute exposé defending a position from a short document + 10-minute débat with the examiner.

Section-by-section prep priorities

Listening at B2 introduces the single-play rule on the long recording — Exercise 2 (5–6 minutes) plays ONCE only. This is the structural break from B1 and requires note-taking during the play, not the ‘listen twice, check’ strategy that works at lower levels.

Reading uses two full 750-word texts, one informational and one argumentative. The argumentative text carries interpretive questions (‘what does the author think?’) that require inferring position from tone and hedging — a skill not tested at B1.

Writing is a single 60-minute task of 250+ words in a specified format. The 4-paragraph structure — hook, argument A, argument B + counter-argument acknowledged, nuanced conclusion — is what separates 20/25 scripts from 15/25.

Speaking is the biggest structural change from B1 — 30 minutes of preparation on a source document, then a 20-minute exposé + débat. The problématique-based structure and the ability to defend under pushback are the specific skills required.

CEFR B2 competencies the syllabus expects

  • All French tenses — present, passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait, futur simple, conditionnel present and past.
  • Subjunctive after key triggers — ‘il faut que’, ‘bien que’, ‘pour que’, ‘à condition que’.
  • Complex sentences — subordinate clauses, relative pronouns beyond qui/que (dont, où, ce qui, ce que).
  • Register control — formal for open letters and requests, semi-formal for forums and blogs.
  • Vocabulary spanning ~5000 most-frequent words plus press-magazine register on current-affairs topics.

How much of the syllabus can you skip? None, effectively

The elimination floor (5/25 per section) plus the significant per-section difficulty jump from B1 means every section requires dedicated preparation. Most B2 candidates who miss the pass do so on Production Écrite because writing is the section most under-trained at self-study — without 8+ full-length 60-minute mocks, the 250-word argued text caps at ~14/25.

The single highest-return study block at B2 is 25 minutes daily on Le Monde or a French quality newspaper, with attention to argument structure (thesis, evidence, counter-argument, conclusion). This directly builds Reading, Writing, and Speaking capacity in one session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is DELF B2 in total?

2 hours 30 minutes for the written paper: 30 minutes Listening, 60 minutes Reading, 60 minutes Writing. Plus a separate 20-minute Production orale with 30 minutes of preparation immediately before. Both usually the same day at the exam centre.

What is the DELF B2 pass mark?

50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on every individual section. For competitive university admission the useful target is 65+ overall with 15+ on each section.

Is DELF B2 accepted for French university admission?

For most undergraduate programmes, yes — it is the standard language competence proof. For selective institutions (Sciences Po, Grandes Écoles) and most master’s programmes, B2 is the floor and 65+ is the competitive target; some master’s require C1 outright.

How does DELF B2 differ from B1?

Every section is meaningfully more demanding. Listening introduces single-play on the long recording; Reading doubles text length; Writing triples word count and adds argument nuance; Speaking triples exposé length and adds source-document preparation. Total study time for B1-to-B2 progression is typically 200–300 hours.
