Why Inference Is Key in TOPIK Reading
Many TOPIK II reading questions ask you to do more than identify explicitly stated facts. At Levels 4–6, questions frequently ask: 이 글을 통해 알 수 있는 것 (what can be inferred from this text), 필자의 태도 (the author’s attitude), 이 글 앞에 올 내용 (what likely precedes this text), or the most appropriate word for a blank where only context indicates the correct answer. These inference-based questions test deep comprehension, not surface-level scanning.
Understanding Main Idea Questions
The main idea question (이 글의 주제, 이 글의 중심 내용) asks for the central argument or purpose of a passage. The correct answer is typically a paraphrase of the thesis sentence — usually found at the beginning or end of the text. Wrong options typically: state a detail rather than the main point, overstate or understate the argument, or introduce an idea mentioned in passing as if it were the central claim. Practise identifying the thesis sentence in every reading passage you study.
Author’s Attitude Questions
필자의 태도 (author’s attitude) questions require you to characterise the author’s position as critical (비판적), neutral (중립적), objective (객관적), optimistic (낙관적), pessimistic (비관적), cautious (신중한), or supportive (지지적). Look for evaluative language: verbs like 주장하다, 비판하다, 제안하다; adjectives like 긍정적, 부정적, 우려스러운; and hedging language like ~것으로 보인다, ~할 필요가 있다. Map the author’s linguistic choices to the attitude options provided.
Inference Gap Questions
Blank-filling questions in reading (괄호 안에 들어갈 말) require you to infer the missing word or phrase from context. Read the sentence containing the blank, then read the sentence before and after. The blank is always semantically and grammatically constrained by its surroundings. Eliminate options that are grammatically wrong for the position of the blank. Among remaining options, select the one that best fits the meaning of the paragraph as a whole.
