The basic-sciences gatekeeper for US clinical training
Conducted by NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) and FSMB through the USMLE programme, with ECFMG handling international medical graduate certification.
- Conducting bodies: NBME + FSMB (USMLE programme). ECFMG certifies international medical graduates.
- Eligibility: Currently enrolled in or graduated from a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a "Sponsor Note" indicating USMLE eligibility.
- Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) at Prometric.
- Structure: 7 blocks, up to 40 questions each, 1 hour per block. Up to 280 MCQs total.
- Day length: 8 hours including 45 minutes of optional break time + 15 minutes of optional tutorial.
- Scoring: Pass / Fail only since January 2022. No 3-digit numeric score reported.
- Language: English only.
