TCF Canada CLB Scoring Explained: How Points Convert to Express Entry CRS

TCF Canada scores each section on a raw scale (Listening/Reading 0–699, Speaking/Writing 0–60) which maps to CLB 4 through CLB 10+. IRCC uses the CLB level — not the raw score — to award Express Entry additional CRS points. CLB 7 across all four unlocks 50 points; CLB 5–6 unlocks 25.

How TCF Canada scoring works

TCF Canada is a computer-based test administered by France Éducation international with four sections: Compréhension Orale (listening), Compréhension Écrite (reading), Expression Orale (speaking) and Expression Écrite (writing). Speaking and Writing are optional add-ons that must be taken for Express Entry additional points.

Unlike DELF, there is no pass/fail — the certificate simply reports the score and corresponding CLB level for each section. Results are valid for 2 years for immigration purposes, after which you must re-sit if still needed.

The scoring detail that matters most

IRCC awards Express Entry additional points based on the CLB level, NOT the raw score within it. This means a CLB 7 score of 458 on Listening earns exactly the same 50 additional points as a CLB 10 score of 620. There is no partial credit for being at the top of a CLB band vs the bottom.

The practical implication: if you are consistently mocking at TCF 500 on Listening (CLB 8), pushing to 550 (CLB 10) does not help your Express Entry file. Time is better spent on your weakest section — a weak Writing score dragging you to CLB 6 costs 25 points vs pushing three sections into CLB 10.

Common scoring mistakes candidates make

  • Only taking the mandatory sections. Without Expression Orale and Écrite, you cannot earn Express Entry additional points regardless of Listening/Reading scores.
  • Chasing a higher band on your strongest section. Only the CLB level matters — headroom within a band is wasted effort.
  • Ignoring the CLB 7 threshold specifically. The jump from CLB 6 (25 points) to CLB 7 (50 points) is a 25-point CRS difference; from CLB 7 to CLB 10, it’s zero.
  • Not calibrating mock scores to CLB. Track your mocks in CLB terms, not raw score, so you know exactly which sections are one band below target.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CLB do I need for Express Entry French additional points?

CLB 7 in ALL four sections plus CLB 5+ in all four English sections earns 50 additional CRS points. CLB 5–6 in all four French sections plus CLB 5+ in English earns 25 additional CRS points.

Does a higher TCF Canada score within a CLB band help?

No. IRCC awards Express Entry additional points based on the CLB level only — a CLB 7 raw score of 458 earns the same 50 points as a CLB 10 raw score of 620. Time is better spent lifting your weakest section into the next band.

How long are TCF Canada scores valid for immigration?

2 years from the exam date. After that you must re-sit if the score is still needed. The certificate itself does not ‘expire’ — you keep the paper — but IRCC will not accept it for Express Entry applications beyond 2 years.

Are TCF Canada speaking and writing mandatory?

For Express Entry additional points, yes — you must take all four sections. For the certificate itself, Expression Orale and Expression Écrite are optional add-ons; without them the certificate reports only Listening and Reading.
