NAT-TEST vs JLPT is a common question for Japanese learners. Both are respected multiple-choice tests with no speaking or writing, and their levels line up closely — but there are useful differences.
Levels and content
NAT-TEST’s levels (5Q–1Q) mirror the JLPT scale (N5–N1), and both test vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. If you can pass one, you are well placed for the other.
How often each is held
The JLPT is the most widely recognised Japanese qualification but is offered only a couple of times a year. NAT-TEST is held more frequently, which makes it a practical choice if you need a result sooner or want more official sittings for practice.
How to choose
If a specific institution or employer names the JLPT, sit the JLPT. If you want more frequent testing or extra practice at the same level, NAT-TEST is an excellent complement. Either way, mock tests are the fastest route to a pass.
