J.TEST Exam Format Explained: Papers, Sections and Grades

The J.TEST exam format (Test of Practical Japanese) is score-based rather than a simple pass/fail, which makes it a precise way to measure your Japanese. Knowing the structure helps you prepare efficiently.

The papers

  • A–C level – advanced learners.
  • D–E level – intermediate learners.
  • F–G level – beginners.

The sections

Each paper combines listening (聴解) with reading, grammar and vocabulary (読解), all multiple-choice. There is no speaking or writing section.

How grades work

Your total score maps to a grade band rather than a pass mark, so every point counts. That makes regular mock practice — with a score you can track over time — especially valuable.
