When HSK Results Are Released
HSK results are typically available online approximately 4 to 5 weeks after the exam date for computer-based tests. Paper-based test results may take 6 to 8 weeks. Candidates receive an email notification when results are available. Log in to the registration portal (cjk.neea.edu.cn or your national HSK portal) with your candidate ID and access your score report. Physical certificates are mailed approximately 3 months after the exam date.
Understanding Your HSK Score Report
The HSK score report shows your total score and section scores. For HSK 3–6, sections are: listening (听力), reading (阅读), and writing (书写). Each section has a maximum of 100 points. The total maximum score is 300. The passing score varies by level: HSK 1 and 2 require 120/200 to pass; HSK 3–6 require 180/300 to pass (60% of the total). You do not need to achieve a minimum score in any individual section — only the total score determines pass or fail.
What Your Section Scores Tell You
Section scores reveal skill strengths and weaknesses. A listening score significantly below your reading score suggests inadequate listening practice — daily audio input must be increased. A reading score significantly below listening suggests vocabulary gaps or insufficient reading fluency practice. A writing score near the passing threshold suggests formal character production or essay structure needs targeted work. Use section score analysis to prioritise the next level’s preparation rather than studying all skills equally.
If You Passed: Planning for the Next Level
Passing HSK does not mean you are immediately ready for the next level. Review your section scores — if any section was borderline (just above 60% of its maximum), that area needs significant development before attempting the next level. Budget preparation time for the next level based on your current performance: if you passed HSK 4 comfortably with all sections above 70%, you are well-positioned to begin HSK 5 preparation. If you just scraped through, consolidate your HSK 4 skills for another 2 to 3 months before starting HSK 5 work.
If You Did Not Pass
A failed HSK result is not a final judgement — it is an accurate diagnosis. Use your section scores to identify the primary reason for failure. Most candidates who fail by a small margin (within 10 to 20 points of the passing threshold) pass on their second attempt with 2 to 3 months of targeted preparation addressing their weakest section. Request a review of your score if you believe there was an error — most HSK administrations allow score review requests within 60 days of result publication.
