Goethe B2 Sprechen (Speaking) – Format, Task Guide, and Scoring Tips 2026

Goethe B2 Sprechen is the speaking module of the B2 exam — and it is the module where candidates have the most control over their outcome. Exam Duration15 minutes (per candidate, in a pair format — one examines while one observes)
Number of Tasks3 tasks
Maximum Score100 points
Pass Threshold60/100

The 3 Tasks

TaskNameWhat You DoTime
Aufgabe 1Presentation (Präsentation zu einem Thema)Present on a topic you prepared in the 15-minute prep period4–5 minutes
Aufgabe 2React to partner’s presentationAfter your partner presents, you ask a question or give feedback1–2 minutes
Aufgabe 3Discussing a scenario / hypotheticalBoth candidates discuss a given scenario and find a solution together4–5 minutes

Task 1 – Presentation Strategy

You receive 3 topic cards during the 15-minute preparation time and choose one. You then present for 4–5 minutes. The presentation must have a clear structure:

PartContentLanguage Examples
IntroductionState the topic; why it matters; your thesisIch möchte heute über… sprechen. Das Thema ist besonders wichtig, weil…
Part 1First argument / aspect + example or evidenceZunächst ist zu sagen, dass… Ein Beispiel dafür ist…
Part 2Second argument / counterpointAuf der anderen Seite… Allerdings muss man auch berücksichtigen, dass…
ConclusionSummarise your position; open question or call to actionZusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass… Meiner Meinung nach sollte man…

Examiners explicitly reward candidates who take a position — not just describe. Do not simply list facts about your topic. State what you think and why.

Task 2 – Reacting to a Partner

After your partner’s presentation, you have 1–2 minutes to respond. Options:

Response TypeGerman Phrase
Asking a questionIch hätte eine Frage zu dem, was du gesagt hast: Wie denkst du über…?
Agreeing with a commentWas du gesagt hast, finde ich sehr überzeugend, weil…
Offering a different viewIch sehe das ein wenig anders. Meiner Meinung nach…
Building on a pointIch würde noch hinzufügen, dass… / Das erinnert mich daran, dass…

Task 3 – Scenario Discussion

Both candidates receive a scenario card (e.g., “Your company is planning a team event — decide together what to do”). You must discuss and reach a conclusion together. Strategy:

Make suggestions: “Ich schlage vor, dass… / Wir könnten… / Was hältst du davon, wenn…?”

React to your partner’s ideas: “Das klingt gut, aber… / Das finde ich interessant, weil…”

Move toward a conclusion: “Sollen wir uns auf… einigen? / Ich denke, wir sind uns einig, dass…”

Do not dominate — examiners want to see natural back-and-forth between both candidates

At B2, examiners expect you to use complex sentence structures: subordinate clauses with Konjunktiv II (“Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich…”), passive voice, and modal particles like “eigentlich”, “übrigens”, “zwar…aber”.

B2 Speaking – Common Errors and Fixes

ErrorFix
Describing rather than arguing in Task 1Open with a thesis: “Ich bin der Meinung, dass… weil…”
No reaction to partner in Task 2Prepare 3 response openers; use one always
Letting partner dominate Task 3Contribute actively: make a suggestion every 2 turns minimum
Only present tense throughoutUse Perfekt, Konjunktiv II, Futur II — variety shows range
Reading from written notesNotes only — bullet points; full sentences penalised for naturalness

B2 Speaking Practice Plan

Key Takeaway

Goethe B2 Sprechen rewards candidates who can structure an argument, engage actively with their partner, and use B2-level German naturally under pressure. The format is fully predictable — three tasks, consistent criteria, 15 minutes preparation. Consistent mock practice, combined with daily speaking habits and vocabulary building, will move your Sprechen score above 60 before your exam date.
