What is DELF A1 Production Orale?
The DELF A1 speaking test — Production Orale in French — is the last of the four sections you sit on exam day. It is conducted by a certified France Éducation international examiner in a one-on-one room, and lasts 5 to 7 minutes of live speaking plus 10 minutes of preparation.
You are being assessed at CEFR A1: the ability to introduce yourself, ask and answer very simple questions on familiar topics, and interact in a predictable everyday situation. The examiner will speak slowly and clearly, and can rephrase if you don’t understand.
Format & the three tasks
| Task | What you do | Approx. time | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Entretien dirigé | Guided conversation about you — name, age, family, studies, hobbies. | ~1 min | /10 |
| 2 · Échange d’informations | Draw 5 keyword cards; ask the examiner one question per card. | ~2 min | /4 |
| 3 · Dialogue simulé | Role-play a simple everyday situation (buying, ordering, asking directions). | ~2 min | /4 |
The section is fixed — the same three tasks appear every session, in the same order. Timings are approximate and set by the examiner:
- Preparation time (10 minutes) applies only to Task 3 — use it to draft the role-play; you may keep your notes.
- For Task 2 you receive the keyword cards on the spot — you cannot prepare them in advance.
- The remaining 7 marks are for pronunciation and general linguistic competence, awarded across all three tasks.

How the examiners score you — the DELF A1 marking grid
| Criterion | Marks | What examiners look for |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 (guided conversation) | 10 | Ability to respond to simple personal questions with basic sentences. |
| Task 2 (question formation) | 4 | Correctly forming a simple question from each keyword. |
| Task 3 (role-play) | 4 | Managing a short exchange — greeting, transaction, closing. |
| Lexical range | 2 | Vocabulary breadth appropriate to A1 topics. |
| Morphosyntax | 3 | Basic grammar — articles, present tense, gender agreement. |
| Phonology | 2 | Intelligibility — you don’t need a perfect accent. |
The 25 marks split into task-specific scores and a shared “linguistic competence” block. Understanding the grid tells you exactly what to practise.
Task-by-task strategy
The single biggest lever at A1 is preparing full-sentence answers to the 8 personal questions that reliably appear in Task 1 — nom, âge, nationalité, profession, famille, loisirs, ville, langues. Rehearse a 3–4 sentence answer to each. Do this and you have banked half your Task 1 marks before you walk in.
For Task 2, memorise the four question openers — Qu’est-ce que…, Est-ce que…, Quel/Quelle…, Combien de… — and you can form a correct question from almost any keyword. The examiner does not mark whether their answer makes sense, only whether your question is grammatical.
Task 3 rewards structure over vocabulary. Use the 10-minute preparation to sketch four lines: greeting, your request, one clarifying question, closing. Even if the topic is unfamiliar, that skeleton wins you the 4 marks.

Common mistakes that cost easy marks
- Answering Task 1 in single words. “Delhi” is not an answer — “J’habite à Delhi, en Inde” is. Full sentences double your morphosyntax marks.
- Skipping the greeting in Task 3. Every role-play scores you on opening and closing lines; “Bonjour” and “Merci, au revoir” are free marks.
- Whispering because you’re nervous. Phonology marks reward audibility, not accent — speak up.
- Using memorised long speeches in Task 1. The examiner will interrupt with follow-ups; a natural short answer beats a rehearsed paragraph.
- Preparing Task 2 questions in advance. You get the keywords on the spot — practice the openers instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many marks do I need to pass DELF A1 Production Orale?
You need 5 out of 25 on Production Orale to avoid the minimum-score elimination, and 50 out of 100 across all four sections to pass the overall exam. A common target for confident candidates is 15–20/25.
Do I get preparation time for the DELF A1 speaking test?
Yes — 10 minutes before you enter the exam room, but only for Task 3, the role-play. Tasks 1 and 2 are spontaneous, and you cannot see the Task 2 keyword cards until the interview begins.
Is DELF A1 Production Orale easier than the other sections?
Marks-wise it is the shortest, but candidates lose more marks here than on any other section. Most fail-narrow scores come from candidates freezing at Task 2 because they never practised forming questions from single-word prompts.
Can I take the DELF A1 speaking test online?
France Éducation international runs Production Orale in person at accredited centres — Alliance Française branches in India, and select universities. There is no online-proctored option for the official certificate as of 2026.
