What DALF C1 Production Écrite tests
The C1 writing paper certifies you can reconstruct arguments from multiple sources into a synthetic overview, and then develop a personal argued position on the underlying issue. It is the closest of the DALF tasks to French academic and journalistic writing.
You pick a domain when you register — Lettres et sciences humaines or Sciences. The dossier and prompt sit within that domain. The paper is single-session, 2h30 for both tasks combined — you allocate the time yourself.
Format & task requirements

How the 25 marks split
| Criterion | Marks | What earns them |
|---|---|---|
| Synthèse — faithfulness | 5 | All key arguments captured without distortion or omission. |
| Synthèse — reformulation | 4 | No verbatim copying; own syntactic and lexical choices. |
| Essai — position + development | 6 | Clear thesis, 2+ defended arguments, nuance. |
| Essai — structure & register | 4 | Introduction / development / conclusion; formal register. |
| Lexical range | 3 | Nuanced C1 vocabulary; press-article precision. |
| Morphosyntax | 3 | Subjunctive, conditional, complex relatives. |
Tactic for the synthèse (60 minutes)
The synthèse is technical, not creative. Its purpose is to prove you can extract, reformulate and balance — nothing else. 30 minutes on the dossier, 20 minutes writing, 10 minutes proofreading. The paragraphs of your synthèse should never map 1:1 onto the source documents; that reads as parallel summaries, and caps you at 5/9.
The reliable structure: paragraph 1 introduces the shared problematic; paragraph 2 develops the convergent points across the sources; paragraph 3 develops the divergent points; short conclusion opens the essai. Reformulation is scored explicitly — verbatim strings of 6+ words are marked as unréformulation.
Tactic for the essai (90 minutes)
The essai is where the total score is made. It is an argued position on the same issue the dossier raises — but the position is yours, not a synthesis of the source views. 15 minutes planning, 60 minutes writing, 15 minutes proofreading.
Structure: introduction (announce problematic + position + plan in 3 sentences), first argument with example, second argument with example, nuance / counter-argument acknowledged and rebutted, conclusion that opens onto a wider question. The nuance paragraph is what separates a 16/25 essai from a 20/25 essai — its absence is the most common cause of a mid-teens total.

Common mistakes that cap you at 15
- Under-length or over-length. Both tolerated at ±10% only; 190 words on the synthèse or 220 on the essai are penalised.
- Verbatim copying in the synthèse. Reformulation is a scored criterion — copied strings of 6+ words visibly drop the score.
- Neutral, unopinioned essai. The essai is not a second synthèse; it must state and defend a position.
- Register drift into oral French — ‘du coup’, filler ‘genre’. Both cap lexical range at 1/3.
- Missing subjunctive at C1. Its absence signals sub-C1 and caps morphosyntax at 1/3 regardless of other structures.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the DALF C1 writing paper?
2 hours 30 minutes for both tasks combined — a 220-word synthèse and a 250-word essai. You allocate the time yourself. Most candidates spend about 1 hour on the synthèse and 1h30 on the essai.
How many source documents in the DALF C1 synthèse?
Two or three documents totalling about 1000 words — usually a mix of press articles, an interview transcript, and occasionally a table or statistic. All are from the domain you chose at registration (Lettres or Sciences).
Can I use the same examples in the synthèse and the essai?
The synthèse must draw only from the sources. The essai may use anything — the sources, your own examples, references from outside. Reusing a source example in the essai is not penalised, but drawing on your own knowledge strengthens the essai’s marks.
What is the DALF C1 writing pass mark?
You need 5/25 on Production Écrite to clear the section minimum, and 50/100 across all four sections to earn the diploma. Most successful candidates score 14–18/25 on the writing paper specifically.
