The DALF C2 grid
| Section | Marks | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Compréhension et production orales (listening + speaking) | /50 | 50% |
| Compréhension et production écrites (reading + writing) | /50 | 50% |
| TOTAL | /100 | 100% |
The two pass conditions
50/100 overall AND at least 5/25 on each of the four sub-sections within the two combined papers (listening, speaking, reading, writing). The elimination floor operates per skill, not per combined paper — a 4/25 on speaking withholds the diploma even at 70/100 total.
C2 uses combined papers because at the mastery level, the CEFR framework itself blurs the boundary between comprehension and production. A synthèse task combines reading (of sources) with writing (of the article) into a single graded output.

What each score band signals at C2
| Total score | What it signals |
|---|---|
| 50–59 | Functional C2 pass — mastery-level command but with visible marginal areas. |
| 60–69 | Confident C2 — near-native operational competence. |
| 70–79 | Rare band — indistinguishable from educated native command in most contexts. |
| 80+ | Vanishingly rare for non-native candidates — signals exceptional command. |
What DALF C2 unlocks that C1 doesn’t
DALF C2 is the ceiling. It is required for practising as a lawyer in France (bar admission), for medical practice registration (in addition to the medical-specific French exam), and for higher civil service competitive exams that expect native-adjacent command.
For most academic and professional pathways, DALF C1 is sufficient — C2 is a marginal upgrade. But for the specific professions above, and for language teaching at the highest level, C2 is the required certification.

Common near-miss patterns at C2
- Passing three sub-sections at 12–15 but scoring 4/25 on Production Orale. The exposé-from-audio task is unique to C2 and the note-taking phase eats into prep time in ways C1 candidates don’t expect.
- Total of 47–49 with all sub-sections in the 11–13 band. Prevention: 8+ full mocks across a 4-month prep window; C2 is not a short-prep exam.
- Under-length article on the 3h30 writing paper. Under 630 words (10% under target) is penalised regardless of quality.
- Missing the pass by 1 mark and skipping the recours. At C2 the certificate is career-defining; the appeal is worth filing if you have grounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DALF C2 pass mark?
50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on each of the four sub-sections (listening, speaking, reading, writing). C2 uses combined papers but the elimination floor still operates per individual skill.
Do I need DALF C1 before attempting DALF C2?
No — France Éducation international does not require a lower diploma. But most C2 candidates hold C1 first because the mastery skills the C2 tasks require typically take 6–12 additional months of focused work beyond a comfortable C1.
What jobs actually require DALF C2?
Bar admission in France, medical practice registration, senior civil service positions, and university language teaching at the highest level. For most academic and professional pathways, DALF C1 is sufficient — C2 is required only for specific mastery-critical roles.
How long is DALF C2 valid?
For life. Once earned, France Éducation international never expires the diploma. This makes DALF C2 a permanent career asset for the mastery-critical professions above.
