DELF A2 Scoring & Pass Marks: The 100-Point Grid Explained

DELF A2 is scored on the same 100-point grid as A1 — 25 per section, 50/100 to pass overall, 5/25 minimum per section. The mark thresholds are identical to DELF A1, but the tasks and marking bar are pitched at CEFR A2, where each 2-mark band takes meaningfully more preparation to clear.

The scoring grid

Section Marks Weight of total
Compréhension de l’oral /25 25%
Compréhension des écrits /25 25%
Production écrite /25 25%
Production orale /25 25%
TOTAL /100 100%

The two pass conditions

As at DELF A1, both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously: overall total ≥ 50/100, AND every single section ≥ 5/25. Failing either withholds the diploma, no matter how strong the other scores.

The elimination floor exists to stop candidates from being certified as functional A2 while being non-functional in one skill. A candidate who scores 22/25 on three sections and 4/25 on one is not, by CEFR definition, A2 across the board — hence no diploma.

What each score band signals

Band per section What it means
5–9 Sub-A2 on that skill — functional weakness that will show in real use.
10–14 Functional A2 pass — the diploma is safe if total ≥ 50 and all sections ≥ 5.
15–19 Solid A2 with headroom into early B1. Candidates in this band should consider DELF B1 within 4–6 months.
20–25 Near-perfect A2. B1 exam is within realistic 3-month reach.

What the DELF A2 diploma opens

For Indian candidates the DELF A2 diploma has two main practical uses. It is the language requirement for the French naturalisation process (though most residence pathways demand B1+). It also serves as the language proof for some short-term work permits and family reunification cases in France.

For university admission, DELF A2 is rarely sufficient — most French universities require B2 for undergraduate programmes and C1 for master’s. A2 is a stepping-stone certification, not a terminal one, for anyone planning study abroad.

Common ways candidates just miss the pass

  • 4/25 on Compréhension de l’oral. The most common single-section failure — candidates prep reading and writing at home but never train listening under time pressure.
  • Total of 47–49/100. Distributed weakness — all four sections in the 10–13 range but not quite averaging out. Prevention: identify the two weakest sections in your first mock and drill them.
  • Passing three sections at 20+ but Production Orale at 3/25. Almost always caused by exam-day anxiety. Prevention: 3+ live mock speaking sessions in the two weeks before the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DELF A2 pass mark?

50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on every individual section. Same thresholds as DELF A1 — the difference is the CEFR bar the tasks are pitched at.

Is DELF A2 harder to pass than DELF A1?

Yes, meaningfully. Reading texts are longer, listening recordings are denser, writing requires past tenses, and speaking includes an unexpected role-play complication. Most A1-holders need 3–6 months of A2 prep before the pass is safe.

Does DELF A2 have compensation across sections?

Only at the overall level — a strong section (23/25) can lift a weaker one (11/25) into an aggregate pass. But the 5/25 elimination floor cannot be compensated. A 4/25 caps the diploma at ‘not awarded’ regardless of totals.

How long is DELF A2 valid?

For life. Like DELF A1, once earned it never expires. Employers, universities and immigration authorities accept the diploma years later without re-testing.
