DALF C2 Production Écrite: The 700-Word Article & the C2 Register

DALF C2 Production Écrite is a single 3h30 task: read a dossier of 4–6 source documents (~2000 words total) and write a structured 700-word article — journalistic, editorial or academic — synthesising the material into a nuanced position. Scored out of 25 with native-adjacent register expected.

What DALF C2 Production Écrite tests

At C2 the assessment is ‘mastery’ in written French. You read a dense dossier — press articles, interview extracts, statistics, occasionally a graphic — and produce a coherent, argued 700-word article. The article is a real editorial or synthesis piece, not a school essay.

There is one prompt and one text type (specified in the prompt — an editorial, a synthèse for a magazine, a briefing note). Getting the type wrong caps you at ~14/25. The domain is what you chose at registration.

How the 25 marks split at C2

Criterion Marks What earns them

Structure & argumentative development 6 Clear plan; sustained line of argument; nuanced conclusion.
Register & text-type fidelity 4 Chosen text type (editorial, brief, synthèse) held throughout.
Lexical mastery 4 Precise vocabulary; no calques; nuanced qualifiers.
Morphosyntactic mastery 4 Complex constructions handled without error.
Style / compétence bonus 2 Rhetorical devices — apposition, mise en relief, controlled inversion.

The time split that works at C2

3h30 is long enough to over-plan and under-write. The sensible split is 1h reading and building a detailed plan, 2h writing, 30 minutes proofreading. Most C2 candidates who miss the pass spent 90 minutes on the dossier and ran out of time for the article.

The dossier gives 5–6 documents; you should extract 3–4 core arguments across them, not summarise each. Your article organises these arguments around your own problematic and thesis — the dossier is source material, not the article’s spine.

For the article itself, aim for 4–5 paragraphs of 120–160 words each. C2 examiners reward tight paragraphs with a single point each, not sprawling paragraphs mixing three ideas.

Common mistakes that cap you at 15

  • Producing a synthèse in editorial’s clothing. If the prompt asks for an editorial, argue — don’t just balance the sources.
  • Ignoring the text type. Journalistic register in a briefing note or academic in an editorial both cap register marks.
  • Verbatim quotation without attribution. Occasional ‘selon X’, ‘comme le souligne Y’ is expected; strings of copied text drop the faithfulness score.
  • Under-length. Under 630 words is penalised regardless of quality — aim for 700–730.
  • One-tone prose. C2 rewards register shifts — a hedged claim, a rhetorical question, a controlled inversion. Their absence caps the style bonus at 0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is DALF C2 Production Écrite?

3 hours 30 minutes for a single combined reading + writing task. You allocate the time yourself. Most successful candidates spend about 60 minutes on the dossier and 2h30 writing and proofreading the article.

How many sources are in the DALF C2 dossier?

Four to six documents totalling about 2000 words, all in the domain you chose at registration (Lettres or Sciences). Mix of press articles, interview extracts, occasional statistics or a short cartoon.

What text types appear in DALF C2 writing?

Three main types recur: an editorial for a magazine or newspaper, a synthesis article for a specialist review, or a briefing note for an institution or organisation. The prompt names the type; the register expected follows from it.

Can I take DALF C2 without having done DALF C1?

Yes — France Éducation international does not require you to hold a lower diploma. But most C2 candidates hold C1 first because the writing task expects the synthèse skills that DALF C1’s Production Écrite trains explicitly.
