Why the Right Textbook Matters
The Korean learning textbook market is large and uneven in quality. Some books are excellent for conversation learning but lack TOPIK-specific content. Others cover TOPIK grammar but provide insufficient vocabulary or reading practice. Selecting the right textbook for your level and learning style saves months of inefficient study. This guide reviews the most widely used and TOPIK-relevant Korean textbooks by study purpose and level.
Grammar Textbooks
Korean Grammar in Use (Darakwon) is available in Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced volumes and is the most widely recommended grammar reference for TOPIK candidates. Each grammar point is presented with usage notes, example sentences, and practice exercises. The intermediate volume covers TOPIK II Level 3–4 patterns; the advanced volume covers Level 5–6. Explanations are provided in Korean with English annotations. All three volumes are available with audio CD for pronunciation practice.
Integrated Skills Textbooks
Yonsei Korean series (연세 한국어, Yonsei University Press) is a six-level integrated skills course covering all four skills at each level. The series is produced by one of Korea’s most respected Korean language programmes and closely mirrors the vocabulary and text types tested in TOPIK. Sogang Korean series (서강 한국어, Sogang University Press) is an alternative with a more communicative approach, suitable for learners who prefer dialogue-based learning. Both series align with TOPIK levels and are widely used in Korean language institutes.
TOPIK-Specific Preparation Books
한국어능력시험 TOPIK I/II (SD Edutech) is published by the official TOPIK examination body and contains the most authentic practice materials. Each book contains 4 to 6 full past paper sets with answer keys and vocabulary explanations. TOPIK Reading/Listening/Writing Skills (Hawoo Publishing) provides skill-specific practice books with explanation-heavy answer keys. These TOPIK-specific books should form the core of your final 8-week preparation phase.
Vocabulary Books
TOPIK Vocabulary by Level (EPS series) organises vocabulary by TOPIK level and topic theme, with example sentences and audio. Vocabulary lists extracted from official past papers are the most efficient vocabulary resource — compile these during your past paper practice and add them to Anki. The Naver Korean Dictionary (사전) app is indispensable for mobile vocabulary lookup with usage examples.
