How Grammar Is Tested in TOPIK
TOPIK does not have a dedicated grammar section. Instead, grammar is tested indirectly throughout reading and listening — you must understand grammatical structures to comprehend passages, and grammar accuracy is explicitly assessed in the writing section. Understanding which grammar patterns appear at each TOPIK level allows you to focus your preparation on structures that will have the greatest impact on your overall performance.
Grammar at TOPIK I Level 1–2
Level 1 grammar includes: basic verb conjugation in 아/어요 form, copula 이다/아니다, descriptive and action verbs, the subject particle 이/가, topic particle 은/는, object particle 을/를, location particles 에/에서, and simple sentence connectors. Level 2 extends to: negative patterns 안/못, past tense -(으)ㅆ어요, future -(으)ㄹ 거예요, ability -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다, obligation -아/어야 하다, and polite request -(으)세요.
Grammar at TOPIK II Level 3–4
Level 3 introduces: conditional -(으)면, reason -(으)니까/아서, sequential action -고, contrast -지만, purpose -(으)러/-(으)려고, experiential experience -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다, and aspect patterns -고 있다, -아/어 있다. Level 4 introduces: causal connectors as that require formal register, indirect quotation patterns -다고 하다/-냐고 하다/-라고 하다/-자고 하다, passive voice -(이)지다/-아/어지다, and causative -(이)시키다.
Grammar at TOPIK II Level 5–6
Levels 5 and 6 test formal written grammar patterns that rarely appear in conversational Korean. Key patterns: -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 (not only but also), -(으)ㄹ수록 (the more… the more…), -는 반면 (on the other hand), -(으)ㄹ지라도 (even if), -에 불과하다 (no more than), -(으)ㄴ/는 나머지 (as a result of), -을 막론하고 (regardless of). These patterns appear in reading passages and are required in writing essays to achieve Level 5–6 scores.
