Multiple choice questions in DELE reading and listening sections are designed to test precise comprehension. All three answer options are plausible and drawn from the text or recording. The Three Distractor Types
DELE multiple choice distractors fall into three main patterns. First, the verbatim trap: an incorrect option uses the exact words from the text, but in a different meaning or context than the question requires. Reading carefully rather than pattern-matching prevents this error. Second, the almost-right option: an answer is mostly correct but misses one word — a negation, a qualifier like siempre or nunca, or a condition like si or cuando. Third, the inference trap: an option seems logically implied but is not explicitly stated in the text or recording.
Reading MCQ Strategy
For reading multiple choice, follow this process. Read the question first, before reading the text. Identify the key word or concept in the question. Scan the text for the paragraph that contains that concept. Read that paragraph carefully and eliminate options that contradict the text or go beyond it. Choose the option that is directly supported by evidence in the text, not by your general knowledge or assumptions.
Listening MCQ Strategy
For listening multiple choice, read all three options carefully before the audio begins. As you listen, mark any option that seems correct. Do not commit to your first impression — continue listening for information that confirms or contradicts your choice. In DELE B1 and B2, each track is played twice. Use the first play to identify the correct section of the recording. Use the second play to verify your answer precisely.
Eliminating Wrong Answers
Active elimination improves accuracy. Cross out options that are clearly false based on the text or recording. Between the remaining options, look for the one that is most precisely and directly supported. When two options seem correct, one usually adds extra information not in the text or changes a key detail. DELE never has two correct answers — trust the process of elimination.
